Noises While Sleeping

A little after my son fell asleep tonight, he was laying on his back and the way he was breathing reminded me of the cackling sound you would hear when someone is "close to dying".. I know it sounds weird and morbid to say that but its the first thing that came to my mind. I checked him to make sure he was ok(he was making that sound for awhile, because I was laying with him until he fell asleep and was getting ready to leave his room) and he turned onto his side at that point and the "cackling" stopped and he started to snore how he normally does. Has anyone ever heard that while their toddler was sleeping, and is it anything to worry about? He is not sick, or at least not showing any signs of being sick..I was just concerned as I never heard that noise while he was sleeping. He snores every night, but nothing like that.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone..yes he does snore every night ...but it's not always all night ...I realized I was saying "cackle" apologies because I think I was saying the wrong word. But I have watched my grandmother die(she was on hospice) and the noises she was making not long before she passed reminded me of the noise my son was making while breathing.

If he snores every night and isn't sick or suffering from allergies I would bring it up to his doctor. Does he snore the whole night through?
A toddler shouldn't be snoring every night. I would look into the cause personally.

If your baby is snoring, the doctor should know. If you are concerned, the doctor should be called and you should discuss with them. Most likely its nothing, but better to be safe that sorry. As for that sound, babies make all sorts of sounds. As long as he was breathing fine, I wouldn't worry about that.

Talk to his doctor, there may be some sort of congestion going on, best to check. Especially with the snoring, which he shouldn't be.

Crystal4224, it's called rales, you don't want to hear it.

The noise I heard I only compared it to the "death rattle " ..(I know I said the wrong word in my original post )..but it's because I've heard it before and know what it sounds like. He snores but if that was him snoring..it was completely different than his normal snoring sound...and it concerned me. I was just asking to get an idea if anyone had ever heard that and could offer input.

Jeez - let's not compare snoring to a death rattle. :)

My daughter is a snorer. She has been since birth. My ped told me not to worry that as long as her breathing is at a constant rate and she is not lethargic in the AM or during the day, all is fine. She is now 6 and still snores. This last check up, I was told that it looks like one of her nasal passages is quite blocked. And recently, I noticed that she is having a hard time waking up. So we have an appointment at the ENT.

BTW - the death rattle can now be controlled with meds - a drop of something in the throat. Just thought I'd let you know!
