I am new to Dallas and will now be a stay at home mom to my 20 month old son. I don't have any family or friends in the area so I am looking for any advice about play groups, playgrounds, etc. We live near the Northpark mall area.

What can I do next?

Join a MOPS (Mother's of Pre-schoolers) group. They meet at local churches. They have regular meetings with childcare, organize playgroups and outings and even babysitting co-ops. Go to their website, mops.org and search for groups near you. I know there is a great group at my church, Wilshire Baptist, which is at Mockingbird and Abrams. That is fairly close to you, but you might find another group closer or at a church of your faith.

When my kids were little, I lived near NorthPark mall and it was one of my favorite places to go when it was too hot or cold to be outside. I pushed them around the mall in a stroller. There used to be an FAO Schwarz toy store where my son would play with the trains. Not sure what toy stores are there now, but I think there is a Lego store. There is a very nice park off of Mockingbird on Williamson, Lakewood Park that has some shade. Also a nice park on Hillcrest south of Northwest Hwy.

There are tons of parks in the Park Cities area (south of Northwest HWY, West of Central, East of the Dallas Tollway and north of Lemmon-ish), so there are a lot of playgrounds, tennis courts etc. Just search the University Park city website to find their address. If you live in the Park Cities there is a neighborhood pool (I think it is $5/per person to go).

There is also a small park in Preston Hollow but I can't remember the cross streets. Preston Hollow is kind of North-West-ish of North Park.

The Half-Price books has a fun little children's area to run around in.

Get a membership to the Perot Museum. It's a great place to play when it's too hot OR too cold outside.
