My Tailbone Hurts

Do any of you know what might be going on with my tailbone? It has been hurting for about a month now. It is a bruised kind of feeling, and it bothers me when I am sitting...well actually, it hurts as I am standing up, after sitting for awhile. I have not fallen or anything, and it is not the muscles that are hurting. It is at the very base of my spine. I do not feel like going to a doctor right now, but do I 'need' to? Any input will be appreciated!

What can I do next?

With both of my pregnancies, my tailbone ached. My doctor just told me that I carried the babies very low and perhaps my tailbone was longer than most women's. Since my second pregnancy, my tailbone aches all the time--particularly after sitting or standing a long time. Exercise would probably help, but hard to find time right now. Nice to hear that I am not alone! :)

I would try aspirin and maybe an ice pack or heating pad. Mine hurts once in a while. I fell on ice once and oh my gosh, it didn't hurt right away but started after I had forgotten I fell. It hurt so bad for a month maybe longer. Oh, my friend hurt so bad she couldn't sit for a couple months without a donut after she had a baby. The doctor said she couldn't do anything about it. I would just try the aspirin for a while. Hope you feel better soon!

K.,

I don't want to be rude here, but taking the advice of a bunch of mom's with no medical background is not the smartest thing I've ever heard. My hubby is in medicine and I just don't understand how people can just "not feel like" going to see a doctor when they notice something abnormal. Or the moms that get on here and explain odd symptoms they or their kiddos are having and asking the community to tell them if they should go to a doctor. The other day there was a post from someone who's kid was definitely having a seizure, but instead of going to the ER, they posted on mamasource to get advice...?My hubby had an uncle that felt like that and was diagnosed with late state prostate cancer that spread to his bones because he ignored other symptoms. Many things can manifest in low back pain...one big one that goes undiagnosed until way too late is a relation to pancreatic cancer and other disorders. I'm not trying to scare you...perhaps some "stretching" would do the trick, but don't you think you owe it to your kids to just go to a doc to make sure??? I hope it turns out to be nothing and you find a way to be comfortable! Good luck!

K.,
I have the same problem, and my doctor said to take some tylenol or advil. Mine hurts when I sit to much. I asked my Doctor about it because we drove to Florida for vacation and I wanted to know what to do. I actually got a dount pillow to sit on. Seems to help some.

I have this problem occassionally. I go to my Chiropractor and before I'm even out the door it is better. It is usually because my sacram is out of whack and once I get an adjustment it is so much better. I haven't had an issue in quite some time though - ***knocking on wood***!

I had this problem when I was pregnant. The doctor said that it had something to do with pressure on a nerve. Even though you aren't pregnant, maybe it could be the same problem. The recommendation was to take a pain killer (tylenol since I was pregnant) and to avoid sitting or standing in the same position for extended periods of time. Also, stretching is supposed to help.

Is it the base of your spine (i.e. the lumbar region) or your actual tailbone (i.e. the part that rests on the seat of a chair?) If it's your lower back, it could be anything - maybe you lifted or bent over wrong and pulled something - no way to know for sure without going to the doctor. If it's your actual tail bone, again - it could be anything. Try getting more exercise or get up and move around more often. Try anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen. Try warm baths. Try seeing a chiropractor. If you're not going to see a doctor, then just keep trying things until you find relief and if nothing works, I think it's time to see your doctor.

Try ice packs, and Ibuprofen regularly for a couple days(anti-inflammatory), and see if that helps. Good Luck!
