I need advice on how to make a bday cake that is easy, fun, and different for my sons 4th bday. I have looked online and seen alot of things that seem cool, but not very easy in my opinion. I am now 31wks prego, and tired, but want something that can be fun for me and my son to make together at home. Also, any advice on an inexpensive place to buy pans to bake in so that we have more options on what type of cake to make. Any advice will be welcomed. His bday is tomorrow, so I would like us to prepare it today or tomorrow together. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I would first like to say sorry for the delay in replying to your responses, and second, THANK YOU to everyone who did respond. We ended up making a Star Wars X-Wing Fighter cake, that was actually not too hard to make, and was pretty good for the first-timers that my son and I are. We will tackle this task again next year I am sure, and will probably return again for some of the advice that was given. He had a great Bday by the way. Thanks again!

My son and I made a train together last year. I used bread pans for the shape of the cars. We decorated with licorice tracks, oreo wheels, an ice cream cone for the smoke stack. We even made a car for the animals: licorice or pretzel bars and animal crackers inside. It was a blast!

Hi C.,
One of the fun things I discovered was cupcakes. They have cute little cupcake holders and wrappers, are already individually wrapped, and can be decorated absolutely darling. Check out the book "Hello Cupcake" for cute cupcake ideas.

Michael's has everything you will need. A one stop shop.
There is one located on Katella and Tustin ave right by the freeway. Good Luck!!!

ABC Cake Decorating Shoppe in Orange (near Katella and Tustin Ave) is the best place ever... both for supplies and for inspiration. They have any type of "decor" you could ever want, but if you're hoping to make the cake yourself they even sell the mix and the fillings! The best part is that they rent specialty cake pans by the day. So if you want a Diego cake pan, or a Thomas, or a Teddy Bear, or whatever, you don't have to invest in a pan that you'll only use once. Go check it out... you'll love it!

I've always loved the 'dirt digger' themed cake. On top of an already baked cake that is frosted, crumble or crush (birthday boy can do this part) Oreos so that it looks like dirt, sprinkle on top of the cake, and add his mini toy cars, dump trucks, dirt diggers etc.

I've seen some people take this variation and do a creepy bug theme with gummy worms and gummy bugs.
