I am in a music rut and I am looking to expand my horizons. What are you listening to? Do you have a wonderful or favorite song/band/group you can recommend? I must confess I am not a big country music fan. More of an alternative listener, I guess. Not into Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber (because, you know, I am not 12) or the like but pretty much anything else goes. Right now I am listening to No Hole in My Head by Malvina Reynolds. Thanks!

What can I do next?

If you like something with a little rock to it, I'd suggest Switchfoot. Especially if you like meaty lyrics. I'd also suggest Fiction Family, Molly Jensen, Sufjan Stevens, and The Civil Wars.

Try pandora.com. Create your radio by choosing the artists you like and they will recommend similar songs/artists. You can create multiple stations for different genres/moods.

You can like/dislike a song they choose and they will modify what they play according to your preferences.

It is free too! (I think up to a certain number of hours a month)

Well I am a 80s-90s listener, so I am not sure if you would like what I like... I like classic rock/pop like Dire Straits, Sting, U2, Scorpions...

A little trick that has worked a few times for me is to list an artist I like on amazon. If you scroll down there is the section "customer's bought this also bought...." Sometimes I am reminded of something I had forgotten about and other times I find a new musician. They also have mp3 samples, which is nice when it's a new artist for me!

Since you are in Iowa you'd have to stream it online but here in Minneapolis, we are blessed with 89.3 The Current. Check them out at mpr.org or http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/services/the_current. The website is a great resource but you can also listen online. They offer a great mix, without a top 10 rotation. Ideal for an alternative music fan- a wide variety of music styles and commercial-free. They even have a kids channel (online-only). We are taking our 2 year olds to their "Rock the Cradle" event this month. Hopefully they will like it as much as their mum and da.

;) good for you! :) music is awesome. my life wouldnt be the same without it!

theres a radio station out of the U of MN in Morris that you might like. KUMM.
http://kumm.org/

you can listen online but i think they might have a lot of music you might like. its a college run station, so theres always a lot of underground or new stuff on there.

also, if you were interested, theres jazzmanc7‬‏ on youtube... he only has 2 on there right now, but his name is casey kavanagh, and hes INCREDIBLY talented. i cant get his song "girl i loved" out of my head. lol.
on fb he has more videos, depending on privacy and stuff, you might be able to check them out, im not sure. if it doesnt work, im sorry. :(
but anyway, i hope ive given you some really good options. one more that i can think of is one i heard about a looooooooooong time ago when i was in school; emm gryner. shes really cool, and alternative, and little known. (i love unfamous ones!) check her out too.

one thing you can do also is to go to pandora.com and put in your favorite artist (hoping they have it) and get a radio station based on them, and you might find lots of new stuff that way as well. thats what i did. ;)

I really like Pandora because they will build you a radio station based on a song or artist you like and then you are exposed to lots of great new-to-you music you wouldn't otherwise hear. They also have great channels like Children's Folk Music that I like to leave on all day. You can stream Pandora through your computer or through a wired music player like the iTouch or smart phone that takes the Pandora App.

Skillet is really good and I agree with the others, Pandora is an awesome way to bring new groups to your attention. My daughter has it on her Nook and she put the groups in she likes and it's opened her up to a whole bunch of other groups she never would have listened to otherwise.
