Hi ladies,

I'm actually posting this question to help out the hubby. He needs a morning pick me up in order to feel awake and start his day and I'm at a loss. We don't drink coffee and tea doesn't seem to do the trick for him. He's also trying to cut out extra sugar since diabetes runs in his family although he has not be diagnosed with it. Just trying to be proactive. This pretty much rules out soda, energy drinks, etc. We also try to buy organic when possible so if you have any tips in that realm we'll take those too! So, what is your morning pick me up? I need my hubby awake and going! Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Great ideas everyone! Thank you so much. I've bought a bunch of apples, we're going to try and increase our workouts, go to bed earlier and bump up the love life! If we're not awake by then we have a problem!

I am not a morning person and I am not one who can just pop up when the alarm goes off and get my day going. I need a few minutes to lay in bed - if I set my alarm, I try to set it 5-10 minutes before I really need to get up so I can lay there, maybe watch a few minutes of the news. Then I get up. I head straight to the shower. A shower is a must for a wake up for me!

A nice crunchie apple can do the trick. It will get you awake, and keep you feeling more energetic longer in the day than coffee. I read a few studies on it, (I don't remember who did them though, it's been a few years ago) and it seems to do the trick for me.

I am a coffee drinker too, but a guy that I worked with said he would drink a glass of cold water and eat and apple ant it was "better than coffee" to start the day :) But I don't know anything better than coffee! But if he is still tired when he wakes, then he is just not getting enough sleep and nothing but more sleep with remedy that!

work out more. Usually a good run the night before makes me sleep like a rock and then next day I am full of energy..or get up 10 mins earlier and go for a morning stroll...also...pray about it. Will yourself to be energetic.

To help me wake up or at least feel that way in the morning, I take a shower, it helps me to feel more awake. I tried taking my shower at night before bed and just washing my hair in the morning to make things go quicker in the morning but that didn't really work. Hope this helps. They have some "energizing" body washes out there, not sure how many are geared towards men but maybe a citrus smell or peppermint would help wake him up.

Try counting back 8 hours from when he needs to be up in the morning and have him try his best to go bed at that time. Try having him eat an apple in the morning, maybe right after his breakfast. Good luck!

Orange juice is a standard. If you are worried about sugar, they do make diabetes-friendly OJ with less sugar. Milk has also been proven to be a good morning energizer due to the protein. Does he eat breakfast? That is probably one of the biggest helpers for my husband.

Hello~ Somehow I missed this question you posted. I read all the responses and I'm surprised no one mentioned to go to the dr and
get his blood tested. The reason I say that is, I too was feeling sluggish, tired feeling when I woke up and couldn't understand. Turns out I was Vit. D and B deficient. I'm now taking Vit. D. once a week and I've been on Vit. B12 shots every two weeks. Wow, what a difference! I really noticed it after the second shot. Also, taking a Vit. B Complex. Then, do the excercise, cold water, shower, etc. Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to get blood work done. Good luck!

My husband wasn't a coffee or tea drinker but was addicted to the caffeine in soda. When he was trying to quit soda an Asian co-worker brought him some Chinese flower tea - he swears by it as a pick me up. You can buy it in Asian grocery stores, but it has to be the real loose leaf flower tea, not the kind you can buy pre-packaged from major tea sellers at the regular grocery store.

How about a good herbal tea. Ginger is supposed to give energy and you control the amount of sugar if any you add.

Is your husband getting enough sleep? Could that be an issue? Some people require more sleep than others..........if the issue isn't sleep, how about a small glass of orange juice..........yes it is naturally sweet, but he might be low on sugar in the morning......even diabetics drink orange juice.........just not a lot of it.
Have him checked for low blood sugar as well as high.......he might need more carbs in his diet. And what about vitamins? Does he take any vitamins? He should be.
I hope this helps. Good Luck.

I drink coffee, but my shower is the thing that gets me going. I pretty much stumble into the bathroom. A cooler shower will help him wake up too, even if it's not the most pleasant thing. Also, brushing my teeth first thing, even before breakfast. I'm really not a morning person, but both of these things help a little.

Usually a good nights sleep helps. We have been taking a liquid vitamin that has really helped and doesn't have sugar so diabetics can take it. Check out the website: http://www.YummyLiquidVitamins.com It's only about $1 per day which is less than all the pills forms out there. Good luck, mornings are rough! :o)

I play some of my favorite songs through Pandora on my cellphone. They wake me up, have me singing along to them, and wanting to get up and dance to them too! I then take a protein shake with Splenda (I also have diabetes in my family and besides, I am trying to lose weight so I won't eat/drink anything with sugar, unless you count the carbs in veggies). The protein shake and some B12 vitamins help in the wake up process too.
