hello Mamas!!!
my question today is about the Mirena IUD(IUC?) i got this inserted in late april, and have since had 2 periods, but they both have lasted about 2 weeks. i was expecting this, because my ob/gyn told me about the side effects and how my monthlies may last longer than normal. my question is, how long do these 2 week periods last? i dont know maybe if it's because i'm overweight? it's not heavy bleeding, more just spotting than anything else, but just seems to linger on forever!!!!!
any advice from any of the moms who have had this please let me know.

Hi Cinthia,
I had the Mirena inserted in Feb; i too had longer periods that lasted about 2 to 3 weeks in length (heavy the first two months, now seem like they are a bit lighter and it is the spotting that lasts). From what my ob/gyn has told me, and a few friends that also have Mirena, my periods should lighten a lot, and then eventually stop by the time it's been in for a year). Everything you mentioned seems normal from what I've experience and heard.

It's normal. I bleed constantly (more than just spotting) and that lasted for about 5 months straight. I had a normal period on month 6, and then by month seven, THE THING FELL OUT!!! I was walking around for two weeks with no birth control..(because the earliest appt. i could get was 2 weeks from then when i didn't feel the string) The doctor said is was probably in a toilet somewhere, and "would you like another put in?" Um, no??
My story is uncommon, but make sure you are checking for those strings ALL the time. If you don't feel them, make sure you get into the doctor as soon as you can and use a back-up method.

Hi,
I had Mirena inserted last March. By July, I was still spotting, daily. That was not normal. I had mine removed. My body didn't react well to it I'm guessing. But, my OBGYN agreed that I should have only spotted lightly for the MOST 3 mths.

Hi Cinthia,

I had my Mirena inserted three and a half years ago. I bled--no spotting about it--for two and a half months, then went to progressively lighter periods and eventually only a tiny bit of spotting (sometimes even less than that, practically nothing) after I'd had it in for about a year. My OB told me that both the initial bleeding and the eventual cessation of my period were my body's adjustment to the hormones in the IUD, and that both were typical.

Years later I still love my Mirena :) I no longer have to fuss around with pads, tampons, Instead, or any other period protection AND I'm still fully covered for birth control. If your body can stick it out, I say go with it!

I've had mine in for just over a year. Same thing Heavy bleeding in the beginning for about 3 months and than just spotting every two weeks and now I might have a day of light spoting every couple months. The hardest thing for me was the mood swings, but they say it only effects about 3% or woman. Lucky me:) But that too has subsided. I guess it takes about a year for your body to truly adjust.

I am curious on your responses since I also recently got the Mirena (early April) and I am still getting my periods. They also last a little longer than normal...about 1 to 1.5 weeks. I have been meaning to call my OB to see if this is normal. So it is nice to see that it isn't only me.

Hi Cinthia!
I also have the Mirena in...I got it put in Feb-so almost the same time. I heard you could have spotting and then your period should go away-I have had two days of spotting and other than that nothing-I hadnt heard about the longer periods of spotting. I guess your body just has to get used to everything but if it doesnt seem to go away I would ask your doc! Sorry I couldnt be much help!!

I have been considering this option as I am currently on the Nuva Ring and cost has gone from $30 every three months to $150 every three months in the last 2 years. The Nuva Ring has worked great for me but the cost is just too much with this economy so I am planning to get the mirena at my next Dr visit which is next week. Thank you all for the insight as to what I may go thru. Cinthia keep us posted as to how things go for you. Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

I have had this for about 3 and half years. It took about 3 months for me to stop spot bleeding. Afterwards I would either not get my period at all or I would spot when I was supposed to get my period. Interesting that all of a sudden this week though, I have had a full period. I am looking forward to getting mine removed after my husband has a vasectomy (which I hope is soon).

I don't remember mine lasting for two weeks at a time, but they were very irregular in length and time in between for almost a year. After that I hadn't had anything for a few years and recently have been getting irregular spotting again...which is a bummer. Good luck, should get better for you soon!!
