Mildew and Mold

We recently started going through our basement - all that stuff you put downstairs when you move in, then forget its there. We'd forgotten about my husband's CD cases with the inserts/covers/lyrics in them. I brought them upstairs and they STINK - mold, mildew, whatever, but they're nasty. Is there any way to get that smell out, or do I have to trash them or put up with the stink?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the vinegar advice! It got the smell out, but I was more worried about the inserts (paper) than the cases. I tried doing a couple, and it did take care of the smell, but I gave up and asked my husband if he really wanted to keep them all, and he let me trash them. :) I feel kind of bad - I was trying to be nice and try to save them, but this time I'm happy to take the easy way out!

J.-

Use household white vinegar. It does wonders and should not only get rid of the smell but the mold/mildew as well. Make up a solution about 1 gallon of water to 1/2 cup of vinegar. Otherwise, right on the vinegar bottle itself it will tell you the dilution you need to use.

Good luck.

Sincerely,
J.

J.,

I would put some white vinager on a towel and try to clean it that way. There are two things that remove mold or mildew or their stench and that is Bleach and Vinager. I would try to clean them if you can so that you do not need to spend more money on things you have already bought. Hope this helps.

Hi J.,
We have the same problem except it's builders error and we still have water and mold coming in and still growing, it's been ongoing for 2 years. We have had a few experts come in and they say bleach & soap and water help a little bit for a few things the rest we had to throw away. A dehumidifier will also help a little too, but not to much in our case. So I hope this helps you a little bit.

Hi J.,
Try bleach on the cases and try cornstarch mixied with baking soda on the inserts. Just put the powder all over the inserts and let them sit for a day. See if that helps......Good luck, C.
