I was looking into medical transcription and I am not sure where to start. I am very weary of these technical and online schools, but I am wondering if they are the best way to go for something in this field. Anyone have any advise on where to begin. Also does anyone do this? I heard there is a lot of work at home business for med transcription. Any info would be great.

My sister does this. It's a tough business and you do not make much money for quite awhile. You get paid by the word (usually), and it takes a very long time to comprehend the shorthand and terminology that doctors use, regardless of schooling. If you really want to get into the field, you need to find someone who is successful in it and is looking to bring on additional people. Then let her train you (well you have to go to the school, too), and then you'll have some doctors to transcribe for.

It is hard to get started & find doctors. Which is why to be successful you need that mentor. My sister met hers through church (and they live in a different state, otherwise I'd connect you). The woman she works for/with makes over $40K a year doing it, but she doesn't have kids and works day and night. My sister started doing it so she could stay home with her children, but has realized over the past 2 years that it really is not a job for a SAHM, as you can only do the job when kids are asleep or your husband is home, etc. Her kids started school this year, so she finally has time to devote to it & is starting to make some money. I'm not sure how much she is making now - I think she brings in around $1,000 a month.

I hope that helped a little...if you still have a lot of questions, I'll email my sister for you. Just let me know.

Good luck!

My Mom does this full time from her home in Arizona and she loves it! A few years ago I decided to take an online course in it and start doing it from home myself. The courses were tough but I got through them. The hard part was finding a job after I had completed. I found that everyone who was hiring needed at least 2 years experience from me but I had just finished the courses so I didn't have any experience. My Mom was lucky in that she took the courses at a community college and they placed her at a hospital after she graduated so she was able to get that experience under her belt. She doesn't make a ton of money - probably $35,000 a year but she's older and that is ok for her. I've since had a child so I've put all this on hold for now. If I had it to do all over again, I'd either go to a community college and take the courses or try to find someone who already does it that can mentor me.
Hope this helps.

Hi C., I am doing medical transcription online at careerstep.com. I emailed 2 of the big transcription companies and asked them which online schools they hired from, then I picked the cheapest lol. CareerStep.com will even place you in a job when you are done. Good luck.

My friend use to do this and she loved it. She advised to also have a mentor, to show you the ropes and to help you network. Since you have a one year old, maybe you know the staff at his ped.'s office. Ask them if they know anything about it.
