I had it 8 times with my daughter-- If i caught it before the chills, fever etc... It didn't last long, maybe a day .... But if I waited until I got the fever and all, it would take a few days to feel completely normal. Just make sure to feed alot and completely empty the breasts-- I would always take a hot bath and use massage in the water to get all the milk out after feeding. Good Luck. If you don't start to feel better in a day or so, call the dr again, you may need more meds. Don't wait too long.. In severe cases some women have had to have their ducts surgically drained.

If you are not using hot water to massage out the breasts and nursing immediately afterwards and also often during the day - the antibiotics will take longer to work. Antibiotics take at least 24 hours, if not 48 to show signs of improvement. If you are still feeling it 3 days from the start - chances are you were either misdiagnosed or the antibiotics aren't going to work.

I have had mastitis a lot and it usually takes about 2 days for the antibiotics to really make me feel better. If it doesn't get better for you after a couple days I would go back to the doc. One time it didn't work and when I went back the doc said I had become used to that type of medicine so it wasn't working. They gave me a different kind and then that cleared it up.

I seem to recall it went away pretty quick, but I caught it early. I never got sweats, fever and joint pain; I just had the painful breasts. My breasts (actually the milk ducts) were gradually less tender over a few days.

I recall the most annoying part was the baby getting thrush (in her mouth) from nursing while I was on antibiotics--and then me getting thrush in my nipples! Ugh, that sucked! (Ha, unintentional pun!)

Ugh, mastitis is horrible! I think it took about 2 days to feel better for me. Hang in there!
