Mason Jars for Cups at Kids Party?

Has anyone used mason jars as drinking glasses at a kids party? I just ordered adorable daisy cut jar lids that were crazy cheap and was planning to use them with cute straws at my son and daughter's birthday parties next month. Then I thought, "glass cups for kids?!?" and wondered if I was crazy.

Have you used them - either successfully or not- with kids? The kids at the parties would range in age from 2-6. Maybe I could make jar coozys for the smaller kids?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok, I didn't think I was crazy! I just see them all the time on Pinterest at little kids parties, but I will definitely either do them for adults only or check out the plastic ones. Thanks!

LOL these responses are funny. My kids were a LOT more careful and aware as toddlers than they are as teenagers. The only time I ever used plastic or paper past the age of two was outside, on the patio (concrete.)
And for what it's worth, I find adults more destructive than children, especially if alcohol is being served.
I love mason jars, especially if the party is on the grass, what's the danger/harm, really?

Some ideas are just bad, no matter how cute they are. This is one of those ideas. Sorry, go with paper or plastic.

Too much of a chance for them breaking, IMHO. Kids this age break things SO easily.

I have seen plastic versions of these at Bed Bath & Beyond. Those would be fine. (But of course, that's not what you have, I realize...)

not for that age range, maybe around 8/9, but anything before that is an accident waiting to happen.

For 2-6, probably not. My 6yr old hardly gets to use a glass at all. Mason jars are fun, but maybe use them in decorations for the party and have them for around the house use. I love a good Mason jar glass, but with a straw for sure!

I think that for a party with kids the chances of something breaking go up.

no glass for kids! The moms will hate you.

Mix sugar, kids, & a party atmosphere....& you have a recipe for disaster.

Save them for a shower or use them daily yourself. :)

Personally, I wouldn't use glass for kids this age. One broken cup is enough glass to cause a lot of fuss. With my preschoolers I used sturdy, low mugs (think coffee mug types) and that worked better.

Heck, even now I'll break a glass or a bowl or a plate every once in awhile.
No way would I use anything glass for kids under the age of 10.

Your idea is brilliant! The older kids might be better with them than the younger ones, but if you only use them at the table it should be fine.
I just ordered some of those lids for myself! Thanks for the idea!

No, not a chance. I'd only use paper or styrofoam so there would be less clean up and no chance of stitches in the party goers.

You could try these plastic mason jar cups by Aladdin

We have some and they are great and so cute! We don't allow cups without lids, even for the adults, because we have cats that like to knock them down or drink out of cups without lids.

Mason jars shatter when they break, so I'd advise against it. We use them as drinking glasses at my house and my girls broke several before they got the hang of placing them down gently and not putting them near a table's edge. Kids can certainly be "trained" to be careful with glass, but not until they're four or five, so why put yourself through that stress at the birthday party? Save the jar lids for something else...

No way. Someone is sure to break one or several and why take the chance of someone getting cut.

We use stainless steel cups until around age 2 or 3 and then my kids all use glassware at the table unassisted, but we've taught them to be very careful. (5 kids and no accidents so far - knock on wood, LOL.) It can be done, but I would not recommend it for a birthday party unless each child had a mother or father assisting them, since I would guess that most of your little guests have only ever been handed plasticware.

No, I would not use those glass Mason jars w/handles for the kids to
drink out of. They will get broken for sure & I wouldn't want any chance
for them to get cut.
I would, however, buy plastic mugs w/handles. They sell cute ones for
kids just about anywhere. Try Target, the party stores, Walmart etc.
They are cute, made for kids and plastic.
