Lymph Nodes - Rochester,MI

My 9 year old has lymph nodes that protrude from his neck. They have been this way since he was 2 years almost 3 years old.

Our pediatrician did some blood work up and found NOTHING wrong. They said in a small number of kids, lymph nodes protrude and are just showing they are functioning.

To alleviate your fears - ask for a full blood work up and see what's going on. If he doesn't bruise easily (one of the signs of leukemia) then I would venture to guess he is like my son and the lymph nodes are working/functioning. If you don't feel comfortable with that - ask what type of specialist you need to see and their recommendation for him/her and go.

I would want a 2nd opinion and some blood work . . . (at a minimum a CBC).

If ur insurance doesn't allow u to see a specialist without a referral, take him to the best ped er there is. I'm a mom too and I would freak as well. However given my experience with my 3 year old, more than likely its normal. My son had one swollen lymph node and I got worried. My ped said not worried but we will do blood work. Blood was normal. 3 weeks later I went on a vaca and he got sick. I took him to an urgent care center. He had 20 swollen lymph nodes. I got worried sick. But the doctor said when they get sick is when they tend to come out. Even with his advice and opinion I still took him to the er when I got back home. I wanted a sure reassurance. I had to argue with the er doctor that I wanted extensive testing done. Sure enough they were all correct. However not one of them mentioned cancer. I couldn't continue to see a doctor if I was told maybe a chance of that but let's wait 2 months. Find a knew doctor. Good luck

I wouldn't wait. I would get blood work now... what could it hurt?? Waiting sounds crazy.

As for finding them, you should have the doctor or her nurse show you if you aren't sure.They are lumps under the skin in my neck that feel hard when I get sick. I have never felt one elsewhere on myself so I am not totally sure otherwise.

You can feel them. They feel like little knots or balls. My son is now 15 and when he was born I could feel them behind both ears. Doc said don't worry about it, its normal. They are larger now and you can somewhat see them but he has never failed a physical ir bloodtest. He has chronic allergies and that's what they chalk it up too. Some people do have larger nodules that mean nothing. Man! Thanks for that scare doc! If you don't want to wait go ahead and get the blood work now but I as well would try to relax- easier said than done! I know.
