Hello ladies,

I have recently given birth to my third child. He was born at 38 weeks and 2 days. He only weighed 4 lbs 12 oz. This was a complete shock to everyone including my docor. I did not have gestational diabetes and I am not diabetic, but he is havien problems with his blood sugar levels. He was born early Wednesday morning and today is Friday, He has been on an iv of sugar water since mid-morning Wednesday. He seems to be doing all right, but the doctors want to keep him on it for a while, until he is doing even better. I agree complely, I want him to be ready before he comes off of it.

This is my question, have any of you gone through something like this and how long did it take to resolve itself?

Please no rude coments if you think I did not take good care of myself during pregnancy, I do not smoke, drink or do anything of the sort. the Placenta was small and the doctor said that sometimes things like this just happen. I was mesuring normal at all my appointments

What can I do next?

Prayers for you and your newborn son. My son is now 19, but was born with very low blood sugar and weighed a normal weight but was overdue. I was not diabetic then but am now. He had a rough first week with jaundice and having to have sugars done before he could eat, if they were low he got formula, and if not breastmilk. I had to pump that first week, but he was able to breastfeed once the jaundice was done. I hope they figure out what is causing this soon and your baby boy is doing better. Hugs!

Oh I'm sorry that your little baby is going through this. I have never been through this myself, or heard of it either. I just wanted to send some hugs your way, and I will say a prayer for you and the baby.

My third daughter was born with low blood sugar (I don't know why), so they gave her a bottle of sugar water shortly after birth. She didn't have any problems after that.

I'm sure they will be monitoring him closely, for both his blood sugar, and his ability to gain weight before they release him. They may also have you monitor his glucose levels for a while, also.

Some babies are born small..... being 2 weeks early, he could have gained another pound, which would still be on the small side, but they'll take good care of him!

My son was born at 36 1/2 weeks, so he was considered "pre-term" (but not premature). He has low blood sugar, low platelets and was jaundice. We were very worried. The nurses and doctors were so matter-of-fact about everything, so I was convinced that they just didn't want to scare me. Our pediatrician said these things just happen sometimes and they are very manageable.

It's really hard not to be scared when this teeny, tiny baby looks so helpless. Just hang in there. It really sounds like he's going to be just fine!!!

As distressing as these things are they usually right themselves within the first month unless there is a genetic disease.
If he does not improve markedly take him to a really good homeopathic practitioner. In Oregon they are all Naturopaths or Lay Homeopaths except for a woman MD in Ashland.
Unless you have some kind of hormonal problem that affected him he should be all right. Genetic disorders usually show up around four months.
