I'm wondering if anyone has any sensible ideas about how to keep socks in pairs in the washer/dryer-- so I stop losing them!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your great tips. I decided to give SockCops a try (www.sockcop.com). I love them. I use them when I drop the socks down the laundry chute and in the washer and dryer. I take them off when I fold them to be put away. No more time wasted matching socks-- no more lost socks! Hooray! www.wdrake.com has them for 7.99 for 20. I bought them from the www.sockcop.com website (money back guarantee 60 for 24.99 and free shipping. I love them!
Thanks for being willing to share your good ideas.
Kind regards,
R.

When I was in high school, a boy in my grade always wore a safety pin in his right sock. I had no idea why. One day I asked and he said, my mom likes me to pair my socks back up before I throw them on the laundy so they are matched. Makes sense I guess. For kids, maybe pin them together when you take them off. It would save a lot of sorting time.

I agree with the mesh laundry bag. I used to pin mine to the laundry hamper so it was always at the top and easy to put the socks into it.

R.,
Buy a lingerie bag and put your socks in there before washing. I started doing this with my toddler's socks because they were so little they would get stuck inside other things and turn up weeks later.

Good luck!

my mom and i put our socks in a laundry bag....or lingerie bag as they call them. I got mine at wal-mart for $3. If you'd like I could send you a link. I even have an extra one you could have that has only been used once or twice...but I think you live kinda far away I'm in Glendale Heights.

If you have a front loader, push the large rubber gasket aside and reach in -- we find lots of socks in there. (sometimes 8 or 9 at a time!!!)

Try using a lingerie bag for them. We had to resort this as our washer was actually eating them. If you have a front loader, the hole that the water drains out of is large enough to take small childrens socks. The repair man opened the pump on our washing machine up and found a number of socks that I was wondering where the mate had gone to.

Hi R.,
try using safety pins. Pin them together once your little one takes them off to place in the hamper.

Well, this isn't an option for me due to the amount of socks in our house, but you could try a lingerie bag. I use one for my bras, but you could pair them up in there and they'd never get lost.

The Container Store has these great packages of rubber "rings" that you thread a pair of socks through, and you can wash and dry them like that. They come in a variety of colors, so each family memeber could have their own if you like. The trick is getting them to be used on a regular basis!
Hope you find these useful! I have!

my grandma used to pin her socks together so when she pulled them out, not only did she have both in tact, but she didn't have to search for like pairs either. . .

My sister, mother of four, told me before my first was born that she has gone to a sock system where each child gets their own sock bag (which is one of those bags you put delicates in, it is like a mesh bag that you just throw into the washer) and she finds the bags in different colors. As you throw the socks in the dirt clothes, you just put them in the bag. Make sure you zip it before you wash it, or all your pre-planning is worthless. Each child has a different color and their socks are then all together when they come out of the washer and dryer. Keeps them all together and makes matching much easier!!

It is the easiest, cheapest sock trick I have heard!!

Ah - blame it on the laundry gnome.. :)

I solved this problem by putting socks in a mesh laundry bag (and if it comes open, just fasten the zipper with a diaper pin to the bag).
