At what age do you think kids are ready to learn how to tie shoes. I have to admit I am not the best shoe tyer in the world and I am dreading teaching my little boy how to do it. I learned it ok enough to do it but I've watched other people tie their shoes and my way is different. Does anyone know the "bunny" method? Someone told me that's the way most kids learn. Do you sing it or just say it? And if you sing it to what tune do you sing it?

What can I do next?

My 5 y/o can tie his shoes but has not perfected the technique. I taught him by sitting behind him and having different colored laces. No song just went through the motions over and over. My neighbor’s 8 y/o son didn’t know how to tie his shoes and she was on the verge of giving up. I was at a teacher supply store one day and saw these wooden shoes with different color laces and really cute instructions on how to tie shoes for kids.

I bought them for her son and within a week he was tying his own shoes =-)

Every child learns differently.

Good luck!

My kids were required by their school to learn how to tie shoes by the middle of kindergarten - my daughter had no problem with that, but my son struggled to learn. He wore shoes and sneakers with velcro until they literally didn't make them in his size anymore. LOL, boys...you gotta love them!

My daughter learned when she was 6 and it seemed like it took no time at all. We didn't do the song...I don't actually know it! We just walked her thru it everyday for a few days and she picked up on it! And...one thing that my MIL told me, which I didn't even think of was to make sure you sit behind them when showing them! That way it won't be backwards for them. Good luck!

another good tip for learning to tie shoes is to have 2 different colored shoe laces (ie blue and red) it's a good visual to help discriminate what to do with the laces. I am dreading teaching my son to tie shoes!!! I have been coached by an OT on how to do it and still haven't gotten the motivation to do it. Good luck!

I'm so glad you asked this because my 4 1/2 year old daughter has been wanting me to teach her and I have no idea how! I'll use the suggestions posted here and see what happens. Thanks!

My daughter learned just before kindergarten. The only shoes we liked had ties, so she had no choice. The "bunny" method I learned from is making two loops then tying them together in a half knot, like the first step does with the two ends. I didn't even know there was a song. However, my daughter couldn't get the hang of it with two loops. She actually caught on quickly to the regular way. She also has very good fine motor skills, and that definitely plays a part. It helps if your kid wants to learn.

If the way you tie works for you, and it's not too complicated, go with that.

My daughter learned when she was five. She is still not the best at tying her shoes now at 7 simply because most of her shoes don't tie. We did not do the bunny method or sing any song, I just taught her how I knew to do it. The problem we struggled with is that my daughter is left handed and I am not. Just do it the best you can, go slow and repetition :)

I actually use another method, and I probably should start trying to teach my daughter to tie hers. She just turned 5! I think Kindergarten is a common time to learn, especially since they have to take care of themselves at school.

This is the method I use: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GStLF21lfY

You can find other videos by searching "tie shoes fast"

I came across this a few years ago & haven't looked back :)

Not sure how easy it will be to teach to a child though... lol
