JFF: The Kiddos Opinion--Good Moms

This morning I got up and watered the front yard, did a little pruning...was out there for about an hour before it gets too hot. Came in for a cup of tea (and a little MP break) and Kiddo invited me to play legos with him. I told him I wasn't interested in that, but..."in ten minutes when I'm finished with my tea, you can come out with me to the backyard and help me water."

Kiddo asks: "Even with no clothes on?" He's in a tee shirt and underwear, his pajamas from last night. He's five and we are completely fenced in.

"Yep." was my reply.

"Mom, you're a good mom." was his answer... :)

This cracked me up... so, in the interest of a little levity, what do your children think makes YOU a good mom? Share your kiddo's criteria and constructive criticism...(I'll come peek at the answers after the berry bushes get a good drink!)

My husband and son got me a birthday cake last night (very sweet). They're also heading off on a guys camping trip for the week, so I put the leftover cake in a cooler for them. Not only do I not need the extra calories, I got to be the "greatest mom ever, ever of all time in the universe" for about 5 minutes there.

Of course, I was also fired as a mom about 10 times last night, for insisting on fingernail clipping, bath time, and bedtime, and other crimes against humanity.

Fun post :)

I surprise my kids with a box of Pop-Tarts in the pantry. It always gets me the "best mom ever" hug from both of them.

Cute post! I can't wait to see the other responses!

Elijah (my 10 year old) - Let's us have dessert. You take us to the lake.
Sebastian (7 years old) - That you are super nice. You take us to the pool. You are taking us to Cama Beach today.

Hmmm....Is it because I am selfless?

I made pork bbq for dinner tonight...it's simmering all day today. I am the best mom ever for that :).

Really, anything I do that makes them happy makes me the best mom ever, and I'm the worst if I say no.

I told my son we could leave his 'butt cream' at daycare because I bought a new one for home. "You da best, mom!" he told me (he'll be three at the end of this month).

He also told me that when I told him he could wear his lightening mcqueen shoes. LOL "You da best!"

My daughter loves when I play with her - in the sand, painting, playing baby or dog, etc. But she also loves to TELL me what to say when we are playing, so I have to kindly explain to her that I like to play with her, but don't like her telling me what to say! LOL

It's gets tougher to be a great mom when the kids are teens - but allowing a sleep over of a couple of guys and getting then LOTS of food to eat while they stay up playing video games is one way. Letting my teen daughter finish out high school online this year so she doesn't have to deal with the mean girls is the biggest thing that made me a good mom!! It's like a I have a new daughter! (she's a good student, smart, self-motivated so I don't need to worry about her getting her work done).
But when they were younger there were many, many times I was a bad mother - and when I asked them if they'd rather have other moms we know, they always changed their minds - except for one mom - who was almost always the preferred mom. Good thing she was and is a good friend of mine. ;o)

I bought my 4 year old daughter a box of envirokids krispy rice bars and she said I was the "best mom EVER!"
Later, I got irritated her b/c she took forever getting out of the car. She said, "You're still the best mom ever even when I'm mad at you!" Lol.

Sometimes I will put a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream on our oatmeal, and the kids love it of course but I told them "Don't tell anyone, because I don't want to get in trouble!" The first few times, they REALLY got a kick out of it because they truly thought I was breaking some sort of health code by giving them ice cream for breakfast.
One time, my parents planned "Gripe night" and it was the best night ever, to be remembered for eternity. It was a night where we all got to take turns "griping" about problems in the family, and it was meant to be constructive, but of course it spiraled out of control as we gleefully complained about each other for hours. Never solved any problems, but MAN did it feel good to get to tell each other off with no repercussions.
Once a year we do "Hatesgiving" and it is just our silly holiday which is a dark version of Thanksgiving. We have our friends over for Thanksgiving fare (turkey, mashed potatoes, pie, etc) and we will do stuff like dress all goth, even the kids, or we will have a pinata, break plates (from the thrift store, of course) and burn pictures of things that make us mad, like a shirt from a job we hated, or the kids will draw a picture of their least favorite meal to throw in the fire. Totally tongue-in-cheek, we are not angry people, but there is something wonderful about simply being able to break rules and vent if you want to. The kids look forward to it so much.

So, basically, I think for me, and my kids, our mom was a "good mom" when she let us safely practice rebellion :)

Well, I have allowed my kiddo to say goodbye to the ocean in his pjs on the last night of vacation and have allowed him to have dessert before dinner a time or two. And he loves it if he asks about a place when we are driving and I pull over to explore right then.

Oh--and I've been thanked for feeding about 500 kids this summer (since the pool) and keeping snacks & drinks stocked.

And I've been told I'm "not a lame mom"! Lol

I am apparently a good Mom the day AFTER I tell her no she can't have dessert every night...

That night she did not want me for a Mommy because I wasn't nice.. :( The next day she said, remember I told you that, well I am glad you are my Mommy and I love you. Still not sure what cahngd her mind, but at least we are back on the same page of dessert being a treat!

And the other thing that makes me a good Mommy is that when she wants to play pretend, she "makes" me guess which princess she is pretending to be, all while telling me who to pick last. So I then get to list and not list, and say twice all of the princesses and she loves that. THen once we get to her princess of choice, I get to doing again to find out which supporting character I get to be (usually the prince!).

Oh and the funniest to me (not so much my husband!) is when she tells me she likes it when I get her ready for the camp bus becuase I do it faster than Daddy so she can play longer and we still make the bus, even if we are always running late.

I've never been told outright that I'm a good mom but certain statements or expressions from my two-year-old will let me know.

1.) If we had a pool playdate I will get "Had fun at the pool."
2.) If we are at the beach here expression when the waves crash on her feet says it all.

It's the little things for my little guy, he gave me the biggest hug when I fixed his sister's old scissors so he could bring them to 1st grade.

Oh and the very expensive hockey league fee. Got a ton of hugs for that one too, now that I think of it. ;)
