les e bon temps rouler!
I love Mardi Gras. I'm not Catholic, but since I always celebrate Fat Tuesday, I think it's only fitting to mark Ash Wed also. Lent, for me is like spring cleaning my life. This year I'm giving up fast food. So, no drive throughs till Easter. Yikes. It's going to be hard. But I need to do it. Are you giving anything up for Lent this year?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My office is laughing at me for choosing fast food because I'm the only one here that actually cooks! But once a week or so I'll grab Subway or Taco Cabana for lunch. I take the kids to Burger King and Chick Fil A to play on the equipment. Every other week or so I pick up a couple Hot N Ready $5 pizzas from Little Ceasars for dinner. Popeyes has 2piece Tuesday for 99c. So, I can get 10 pieces of great fried chicken for $5! I go home and make a salad and veggie and call it dinner. I couldn't make it that cheap at home. When I look at my jeans and my bank account I really regret all those little charges. But this is going to be hard. We're planning a weekend trip and that means no pulling through Mickey Ds on the way. People don't realize how hooked we are on convenience foods.

We gave up fast food last year, and this year we're giving up eating out all together! It's going to be hard, but good for us.

In the past I used to give up popcorn and had a box waiting on Easter morning :) This year my kids and I might just do a lot more random acts of kindness. DH isn't Catholic so he won't give up things for Lent. I'm allergic to fish so I usually eat Mac n Cheese on Friday's. It's hard enough to remember not eating meat on Ash Wednesday or Good Friday LOL. Since my husband's 5th paycut it's hard to stay focused so I see doing random acts of kindness instead of giving something up this year. Fun topic!

I choose different major holidays to suffer through/celebrate every year. This year is lent (in honor of my catholic grandmother who never missed a day of mass in her adult life...7 days a week and twice on Wed & Sun). Next year is Ramadan (assuming I'm neither traveling nor pregnant/nursing nor sick).

For lent I'm giving up mamapedia and message boards. Deep sigh.

First, I have to say we must be sister's from another mother 'cause your fast food "habits" sound EXACTLY like mine! I had 99 cent Popeye's last night! LOL I too am not Catholic but have often given up something for Lent ever since childhood because the majority of my friends and family are Catholic. This year, I've given up soda. I am highly addicted so I have warned my family that I will be grumpy until Easter. :-) My husband is giving up bread (he's diabetic so this is a very good thing for him) and my 11 year old daughter is giving up ramen noodle soup (it's her favorite food so I'll be shocked if she does it). Fun question!

Blessings,
N. :-)

CANDY! I hardly ever eat choclocate, but I love any chewy or hard candy. To the point I will stop at a Walgreen's on my way home to grab a box of Gobstoppers or Jujy Fruits just to munch on in my truck!! Ridiculous!!! Who does this as an adult?!?! I don't need it, but boy do I love it :) Had my last "fix" yesterday....come on April 25th! Ha! Ha! Ha!!

I am Catholic and have always given something up for Lent. However, my DH is deployed, so I'm giving up sex, sleeping through the night, and sleeping in--HA! Unfortunately, I'll still be giving up these things long past April 24th!

My mom always said we could "do something extra" instead of give something up. So, I'm going to donate something every week to a local charity (Ronald McDonald House). I'm going to get the kids involved too!

We're encouraged to pick something that impacts others. As in... how can I be more like Christ to the world ? I'm giving up negativity and sharing positive thoughts and actions with those around me more often. I actually started this weekend to work on anything that seemed to burden me, realizing how I could see it as a molehill and even make something good happen out of this bump in life. I pray I keep this up all Lent. I think it will help me live out the faith better. Great question.

In my church we don't practice Lent, however, my husband is catholic and he always gives up something, usually soda drinks and chips. It definitely saves us money! This year our 13 year old daughter also has decided to give up juice and bought cookies, not sure why the cookies as we don't eat a lot of them, but she definitely needs to cut bac on juice. Not many people realize the amount of sugar in juice, even in 100% juice.
