Is This Normal? - Lake Dallas,TX

My baby is 8 months old, and although he is very good in all other areas of development, he still isn't sitting up very well at all. He just acts like a total lump. In the high chair he shows a little bit of control, and he can sit VERY supported, but every day I try to get him to sit on his own and he's just not doing it. I looked in my 2year old's baby book and I had written in there that he sat up at 6 months old. Was I just dreaming things up or is this baby behind? Does anyone know if this is normal?

What can I do next?

My son was the same way. He didn't sit up until he was 8 months old and then he didn't do it well. He didn't crawl, not even army crawl until he was 2 days past his 1st b-day and didn't walk until he was 16 months old. He learned to scale a flight of stairs way before he could walk. Where he lacked in physical things, he excelled in others. He talked way early and has a huge vocabulary now and rolled over at 2 1/2 months. So don't sweat it. He's completely fine. My son is now 21 months old and very active!

Just my 2 cents. As long as your pedi isn't worried about it I wouldn't be.

It's on the late side of normal - but given that 6 months is average, for every baby that sits at 4 months, there is one that sits at 8. My son could not sit up well in a high chair on his first birthday. We had other problems, though. I hounded my pediatrician for a referral to a neurologist and an orthopedist - we got hypotonia w/ unknown etiology as a diagnosis.. we stuck through a year with ECI (fabulous people), and then I quit my job to do it myself. He'll be 3 in January. He's been walking about 6 months (started at 28 months) and sitting up solidly for a year - maybe 14 months (started at 20 months). We're still dealing with all kinds of "quirks" - but physically, he's fine now.

I tell you this to try to help you not to worry - and to say that it's still on the scale of normal, but if you're concerned - bring it up to your pedi.

This is normal. I have a friend with a baby one week older than mine. At seven months, my baby was army crawling everywhere but couldn't sit and her baby sat like a pro but wasn't even interested in moving. Now they are about 9 1/2 months and they're about the same, both crawling and sitting. I have another friend whose baby is almost a year and doesn't crawl as vigorously as my 9 1/2 m/o. Of my own kids, two were walking by ten months and two waited till they were 13 mo. It's highly individual even among children of the same parents. Just give him the opportunity and he'll be fine.

Based on my experiences this is quite late, both my boys were sitting well by 6 mos. My younger son at 4 mos. You should ask your pediatrician - it's possible that physical therapy might be a good idea. It also depends upon how much muscle he was born with and his overall diet since birth. Breastfeeding tends to produce leaner babies. HOw mobile is he? IF he's fairly mobile, then it just may be his overall physical build and perhaps he's just wanting to be held during meals.

I have 5 kids, and they all did things at different times. While my first could sit at 5 months, and walk at 9-my second didn't sit up until 8 or 9 months, and start walking until 14 months. I'll tell you though, by the time they are 2 or 3, you won't know which sat up early and which didn't.
