Is There a Visible Difference?

Last night my son was playing goalie in a soccer game and hurt his finger. We are calling the doctor, but I was just wondering if there is any visible way to tell if it is broken or just jammed. Right now it has a lot of bruising and is a little crooked looking at the top joint but it is hard to tell because it is so puffy. He wears goalie gloves that have finger protectors in them, but it doesn't look like they protected him too much! I hope the doc can see him today!
Anybody know if you can tell a difference or what the doc will do if it is broken?

What can I do next?

It sounds like its broken. I broke my thumb before and it was bruised and puffy. It was pretty sore. They didnt do much for it, I just had a wear a little brace on it for a couple weeks. He will be out of soccer if its broken though. :(

Well, my son had three of his fingers smashed flat in a door (fighting with his brother) and huge, puffy, bruised - no break.
The reality is with a break or a jam they treat pretty much the same with a splint:) but is still good to know.

My older daughter was a keeper for 10 years. She broke her nose a couple times but not her fingers, those were always sprains or jamming. It takes a lot to break fingers and balls just don't cut it, feet, that would be a different story.

I wish I could tell you what it looked like but she wasn't one to bring injuries to me or anyone for that matter. The only reason the doctor got to see her nose is that it was her nose, kinda hard to ignore.

My hand was bruised on both sides when I broke a finger. I didn't have much swelling and did not really hurt, it was a little numb more than anything. I had a splint, but could still do pretty much anything. In gymnastics I couldn't do anything on my hand for a couple of weeks, but could still do a lot of the other stuff. Good luck to your son and hope he heals quickly.

i broke my arm. there was no way to tell with the naked eye. it showed on the xray. either way, give him advil, motrin, or alieve and ice it for pain and swelling until dr can see him.

My husband took a ground ball wrong in a baseball game once and hurt his middle finger. It was crooked right on the end too. When we went to the Dr the xray showed it had a chip off the bone. If you see the xray, the very last bone in the finger is like a small triangle and he had chipped off a tiny little corner. It was really weird cause his fingers are so short and fat,, we teased him about it being like breaking off the big end of a carrot. It was sore for a few days and he had to wear a splint on it for a few weeks. Its still slightly cooked and he likes sticking up that middle finger to show people,,,lol

If it's crooked at the top have a doctor look at it, or at least get a splint to straighten it out. My ring finger on my left hand is crooked at the top because of an injury that went untreated when I was young. It doesn't hurt or impact my life any, but you can definitely tell it's crooked and it's been at least 25 years since the injury.
