My stomach muscles feel so tight, especially around my belly button it feels like pulling and stretching. Is this normal, has anyone ever felt this before?

Hello D.:

I think it's best to get the answer via a consultation, especially since you are pregnant. The belly button is located in the middle of the small intestines, so it may be a digestive/intestinal upset. But, please refrain from speculating. Find out what's going on.

I can't remember feeling like that or not but the first thing that comes to mind are: Is this your first baby and do you have tight abdominal muscles, i.e., a six pack? Perhaps these things could make a difference in your muscles starting to stretch. I've heard that hormonal changes allow your ligaments to stretch...anyone know if there are ligaments around a belly button? Either way, good luck!

Yes, absolutely - I felt the same way through most of the first trimester. Things got a lot better around 15-16 weeks. Good luck and congrats!

Yes, totally normal. It's your stomach muscles stretching out (called round ligament pain). I had the same thing when I was pregnant with my daughter. If you try switching positions it helps (ie. if you are sitting, try standing).

Hi D.,

Congratulations on your pregnancy and, yes, I felt this during both of my pregnancies. Not only is your skin stretching, but your abdominal muscles and ligaments surrounding your pelvis are stretcing and pulling.

As a mom, preinatal fitness specialist and founder of Maternal Dance, I recently released RHYTHM FOR LIFE - The Prenatal Belly Dance Workout DVD. The chapter called Relax & Rejuvenate is 15 minutes of yoga therapy, stretching and hip opening exercises to ease the tightness and pulling you describe as this is a very common symptom for moms-to-be. Having said this, always run these things by your health care provider.

You may go to my website to check out info about the DVD and upcoming classes/workshops. The Prenatal Belly Dance Workout DVD is also available on the March of Dimes online catalog, http://www.marchofdimes.com/catalog/product.aspx?producti...
and Amazon.com.

I did. Felt weird. Started itching too from my skin being stretched tight. This is probably more common the thinner you are. I had extra weight so it took awhile for me to feel this so much. congrats!
