Ingredient Info for Culturelle?

Hey, y'all! I have seen in the past some of you talking about probiotics for your kids (one in particular, Culturelle). My niece is having a lot of trouble with her bowels, and I suggested this for her. The problem is, they're Muslim and cannot have anything with pork in it. Most vitamins have gelatin (crushed pork bones), so she can't even take regular multi-vitamins. I have tried to research Culturelle on the internet, but cannot seem to find an ingredient listing anywhere. If any of you have a supply on hand, would you mind looking to see if gelatin is an ingredient? Also, if any of you have any suggestions for gelatin-free vitamins, I would greatly appreciate that as well. (My niece is 7 years old and she doesn't always eat right.)
Thanks so much in advance for your advice!

Thanks so much for all your responses! This is all great information!! It appears that Harry's/Whole Foods and the health food store are going to be her best bet.

I appreciate you taking the time out to research/respond!!

Don't know the ingredient but try having the child drink prune juice. A little everyday works wonders! My daughter used to drink about 2 oz every morning with breakfast. She never minded the taste either, she kind of liked it actually.

The other suggestion I heard from my pediatrician was to alternate pineapple juice and apple juice daily. My daughter pretty much eats pineapples every day so this has worked well also.

Hi N.,

Culturelle contains "Ingredients: inulin (chicory root extract), Lactobacillus GG, gelatin (the capsule)." I got this information from awakennutrtion.com.

I shop from a company that is a registered pharmaceutical company that manufactures natural products. Their vitamin and supplement line is kosher as well as their cleaning and laundry supplies. They do have a probiotic/prebiotic that is incredible and a few other things I could recommend for your niece's other issues.

I'll be glad to give you more information if you're interested. The cost of these products would compare to Walmart prices and they are a superior quality to even the health store brands.

M.

N.- You can find lots of different kinds of probiotics at Harry's or whole foods- they are usually in the refrigerated section of the vitamin section...jarrow is a good brand- but I don't know if it has gelatin in it...you could always ask the person in that department.
Good luck

Hi, I give my daughters Natures Way Primadophilus Reuteri in powder form. It comes in a small round white, yellow and blue container and is refridgerated in the supplement area at Whole Foods. Since it is a powder I just add it to their milk. The other inert ingredients are Potato Starch and Silica. It has five different probiotics and Nutraflora which is shown to colonize the the intestinal tract.

We use Udo's Choice Infant Probiotics found at Whole Foods. I'm at work, so I don't have the ingredient list on me, but we've had luck with it.

Thanks!

There are many types of probiotics. I'd go to a local health food store or herb shop and talk with an employee. They are often more knowledgable than those at other stores. My daughter has taken probiotics for children at I do not see gelatin listed as an ingredient (unless it is by another name). It is Nature's Way Primadophilus Kids. They are orange flavored chewables.

i am also muslim. my children take probiotics and they have taken culturelle in the past. i would just open the capsule (i don't think the capsule is gelatin based)and poor the granuals into applesause but now they take a chewable one by Jarrow Formula called Yum-Yum they are completely vegetarian and pork free. they taste good and they enjoy taking them. as far as vitamins my kids take Animal Parade multi vitimans. you can find them at your local health food store along with the probiotics or you can go to vitacost.com and order for much less than the store.

Look into triphala for her. You can get it in powdered form and mix it with honey or juice (this is what we do with the kids) It's fantastic for any and all digestive issues! Triphala literally means "three fruits" and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine safely for hundreds of years. It's safe, gentle and it really works. A good place to buy it is Banyan Botanicals online or at Mountain Rose Herbs online. Get at least 8 oz or so b/c the recommended dose is 1 tsp several times per day. It's ultra high in Vitamin C and calcium too (added bonuses) and it gently cleanses and repairs the digestive tract. You can also get it in tablets, but I don't know if there is gelatin; you can look into that.
Good luck! Oh, Probiotics are great too; these can be used along with the triphala. How about yogurt? Does she like that? Also, you can get powdered probiotic supplements instead of the capsules, or just open up the capsules and sprinkle on food (it's tasteless).

Hi N.- I don't know the ingredients of culturelle but wanted to share with you another probiotic that I have used for my 18 mo. old son. It is called lactinex and it does not come in a capsule, it comes in packets of sprinkles that you can sprinkle on applesauce or whatever. They are sold at Target or CVS and are kept in the refrigerator behind the pharmacy counter.

The acidophilus and bifidus bacteria are the ingredients needed, you can find children's powdered acidophilus, non-milk and vegetarian -- refrigerated case at the back of the vitamin sections at Life Grocer and Harry's, you can buy it in capsules and open them up -- sprinkle on a spoonful of soup or yogurt or ice cream, mix in a little juice. This will help her and everyone tremendously to feel better.
TIP. if you think you are getting the flu, or nauseous try to get a lot of acidophilus into you, and it will just neutralize it! Kills the bad bacteria AND viruses and much cheaper than a dr. visit. Anytime you have to take an antibiotic, you should also take acidophilus to replace the good bacteria that it is killing along with the bad that it's eliminating. And keep taking it for 2-4 weeks 3X day.

IT really really works.

I am not sure about Culturelle....but if the probiotics are in a gel-cap, can they not empty the contents into some applesauce? Or is it so strict that it cannot even touch the gelatin? Acidopholis (available in milk in the dairy isle) might be an acceptable alternative. You can also get that as a liquid in the health food store. The health food store also would be the place to start for vitamins that do not have any pig products as well. They can also have her eat yogurt. The good kind...the health food store type....available in the grocery isles..but not over colored, weird flavored, marketed to kids on McDonalds stuff--but the really good kind with lots of active cultures.

Hello N.,

I am an Area Manager with a Swiss Health and Wellness company called Arbonne International. We carry a variety of products, including Vitamins for Men, Women, and children. Our products are vegan certified and Kosher. They do not have any animal by-products. My children take the "Teen" vitamins, even though they are much younger than teens. The vitamins are like Now N Laters, so they are chewable.
If you are interested in learning more, please let me know.

By the way, we also carry skincare, weight loss products, body care, hair care, etc. None of it contains animal by-products.

My kids are vegetarian and I've found Yummi Bears makes a vegetarian version of their gummy bear vitamins. Many supplements will say "suitable for vegetarians" on the label. I'm not sure if vitamins are labeled Kosher, but that would also rule out the possibility of pork.

I think the gelatin is only going to be an issue for supplements that come in capsule form, so most tablet, chewables and liquid ones wouldn't have that problem. And if you can only find it in capsules, you could open the capsules and just use the contents.
