My infant daughter had the same problem when she was first born. My pediatrican said that they are not bothered by them at all. It is due to their under-developed digestive system. They do grow out of it....my daughter still gets them every once in awhile. Honestly, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Just let it work itself out over the next few weeks.

S., Actualy the hiccups bother us more as a parent then they do the baby, my son is 8 1/2 mos old and still gets the hiccups. They say if the baby had hiccups in the womb they'll have them out. Don't worry about them and enjoy every moment wuth you new baby girl.

my daughter had the worse hiccups as a baby. she would get very mad and start to cry. my grandmother told me to dip her binkie in sugar and have her suck it. she didn't like the roughness of the sugar at first but got use to it and it worked every time. you may have to dip it in the sugar a few times before it works. same with adults and children, eat a teaspoon of sugar and they will stop.

Hi S.!

Congratulations on the birth of your new baby. My boy also got the hiccups very often when he was a newborn. To me, they seemed like they were very deep and very annoying to him, if not painful. He also had reflux and I think they might have been related. What often helped him was to continue nursing or sucking on a pacifier. I read that the sucking helps to get rid of the hiccups. Also, I know a lot of Moms who swear that Mylicon and gripe water work for hiccups. If Mylicon ends up working for you - look around for the generic - it will save you a lot of money.

Good Luck and have fun with your precious little one.

My son did that too. I was concerned but his pedi told me that it didn't cause him pain. I would let him do it some, but if it was a lot, I would give him a little more milk (I mean like 1.5 to 3 ounces) and that made him stop. I also would let him sit up a little straighter with his bottle (me holding him in that position)and was careful to burp him well.
Re: that mylicon stuff, I have to agree with another post. DO get the generic. Our favorite, oddly enough, was the cheapest I found: at Babies R Us it's called Tiny Tummies. Joe seemed to like the taste better, and it worked faster and more importantly LONGER than Mylicon which was twice as expensive. With the name brand, he needed it more often. He was a preemie who had bad reflux and Tiny Tummies worked miracles until his little belly developed better.

I've been told that hiccups are a sign of over stimulation in a baby. They get them less as they get older. My son used to get them more after a feeding at the end of a busy day.

Imagine being a baby learning about life, light, louder sounds, eating for the first time, burping, getting cold, etc. I imaging all that can be pretty over stimulating. They do grow out of it. My daughter seemed more bothered by hiccups than my son ever did, but by 6 weeks many of them had gone away.

Just feed and burp your baby and enjoy being her mommy.

S.,
My 6 week old gets them everytime he nurses. The dr. at the hospital told me that he is eating so much that he's very full and that is triggering the hiccups. I have never heard that before as a reason, so who knows the accuracy of that comment. I have found that my son gets through them much quicker if I sit him up right after he nurses and that sometimes he only 1 or 2 when I do that. I hope you are enjoying your new little one and that she gets over the hiccups very soon!

I have a two and a half week old daughter that also gets the hiccups a lot and I just breastfeed her and then they go away. I think it is common and that it doesn't hurt them as much as it hurts us. Their bodies are just getting used to life outside. Ask your doctor if it really bothers you, but my first daughter did the same thing and they both had hiccups a lot when in utero too. Oh and sometimes it means they are cold. If you wrap your daughter in a blanket, it might help too. It did for me.

I noticed my daughter would get the hiccups if she didnt get burped enough.

She still gets them if she doesnt burp after drinking her milk. I get rid of them by having her lay on her back and drink her milk.

Hiccups are normal, especially for newborn babies. They are nothing to be concerned about! I wouldn't give medicine (mylicon) for hiccups...that's not its intended purpose, and the hiccups aren't hurting her - they'll go away on their own! Lots of babies hiccup in the womb, too. It's nothing to worry about :-) With breastfeeding, your daughter will eat until she's full, so there's no need to give her more or less than what she eats on her own. Congratulations on your new baby!!
I just looked it up in "What to Expect the First Year" and here's what it says:
Some babies aren't just born hiccupers, they're hiccupers before they're born. And chances are, if your baby hiccuped a lot inside of you, he'll hiccup plentyin the first few months on the outside, too. But a newborn's hiccups, unlike the adult variety, don't have a known cause. They are believed to be another of baby's reflexes, though they're frequently triggered by giggling later on. And also unlike adult hiccups, they're not bothersome, at least not to baby. If they are to you, try letting your baby nurse or or suck on a bottle of water, which may quell the attack.

Hope that helps!

Have you already tried nursing her a little more once the hiccups start??

Also, Mylicon drops are actually for gas, however...they can sometimes get rid of an air bubble that may be irritating the diaphragm. Mylicon is also sweet, which stimulates the phrenic nerve. This is the nerve which is responsible for the hiccups.
This is also why a spoonful of sugar helps for older kids.

Hope this helps!!

Hi S.,

My name is A. i am a mom of an 8yr old and 4 yr old and i run in home childcare.. from experience I would say try just very small amounts of water in a bottle that has the nipples that simulate a breat nipple. Just small amounts should not affect her breastfeeding and will help eliminate the hiccups.. poor thing.. some babies just seem to have them more than others but she probably isn't as bothered as you may think... try and see if that works for you and I hope it does! Thanks and good luck!

My son had frequent hiccups as an infant also. I actually do not recommend that you medicate unless your pediatrician believes that there is a problem. We always did mild tummy massage and it seemed to help him right through it.

We used Little Remedies "Gripe Water." It's ginger in sugar water.

You can't and don't need to. It is common for infants to get hiccups and they don't bother babies as much as you think. Not like adults. It is just a reaction from a gastrointestinal system that is still developing and will eventually subside. I think my daughter finally stopped having them after every feeding at around 10 weeks. Just a heads up. mylicon is for lower gastrointesintal gas, not for hiccups. Gripe water is to sooth a baby who is colicky. There is no need for those things. Babies w/ reflux can have hiccups but the majority of healthy babies have hiccups. Keep an eye out for hiccups accompanied by projectile vomiting, and I mean exorcist like vomiting-not spit up and your baby avoiding a bottle before I would be too concerned about GERD. My doughter spit up about 60% of her bottles in the first 2 months. Babies have a lot to adapt to at when they are first born.

Nurse her when she gets them and that should take care of that episode. Don't know of any "cure" so to speak.

My son (now almost 3) and my daughter(now 1) both had bad hiccups as infants. They even did in utero. Anyways we found that Gripe Water worked best. It has very natural ingredients and is found at most drug stores. I could even give them half the recommended dose and they cleared up instantly. I was a little hesitant about any kind of drug or sugar water for my tiny baby, but my sister said to give it a try. I also exclusively breastfed and wanted the best for my babies.
Not positive on what really causes them, but I was told they could be from being really full. These drops are also helpful with gas and colic babies, but it is amazing what they do for hiccups. They even work on adult hiccups because my husband has tried it on a few occasions.
Hope this helps and congrats on the precious little one.

A certain amount of hiccupping is normal, but it is also a symptom of acid reflux. I would mention it to your pediatrician.

My daughter gets the hiccups a lot too. She is 9 months old now and hiccupped when I was pregnant with her too. I asked her pediatrician about it and he said they didn't hurt her but instead was just part of her development. I also have hiccups quite a bit so I didn't think too much about it. He did say if she had them consistently and constantly for three days in a row I should be contact him.
