we had my daughter's sweet 16 at St Gregory's Hall. It's nothing fancy but we had an absolutely wonderful time. They allow you to BYOB even beer as long as the beer is not in bottles. They have a lady who sets up & sells set ups, chips, etc. She is out of the way so that she is not in your way. You ave to set up your own caterer to come in but they are used to these kind of parties & can help you out at the rectory.

I'm not sure what your price range is or where you are located, but I went to a beautiful debut-type party at the Spring Hill Event Center. I looked there as a possible reception site, but it was out of my budget. They are an all-inclusive site though...rentals, caterer, even floral (I think) etc. You should also check into churches and their event halls. Many have them and they shouldn't be too costly to rent for the night. And seeing as how it IS a church, I can't see them turning you away for trivial matters such as the amount of money you want to spend or the fact that you won't be having a lot of alcohol. Oh and by the way, if you hire a photographer...stay as far away as you can from John Nolan and Exclusive Images. He has kept $600 of my money and never rendered ANY services. As a matter of fact, we only met in person twice! Though I guess he feels that those two hours were worth $600.

Do you go to church? maybe if your church or a family members church has a "Rec' Hall"...you might be able to do that instead, and maybe hint to the drinkers you do not want that so much in a nice way by having it at a church hall. The price should not be too bed but again this is weding season so who knows.....

Oh, just thought of this also...its a long shot but if you have military family....your local VFW. There is one of broadyway and other locations. The one of broadway is a really large two story house with space for dancing, tables, and a bar. ( they do not serve anything but beer if you want and ice set ups no hard stuff)
This might be another way to go, my aunt had a party there recently.

Good Luck, I am glad you got the money back do not you just love people like that.

This may be pricier than when I got married a couple years ago! But you may want to try Granberry Hills in San Antonio. They have a website so you can see the location and the different venues they have to offer. I believe they just built a new facility, but they also have an enclosed tent that will accomodate! it was really nice and my wedding there was beautiful! They staff is really nice also.
