I Am a Worried First Time Mom.

I have been having pains in my lower back if I sit up for 10 minutes or less and I have been feeling my uterus tightening up then letting loose when I am laying down in bed or just sitting down, and my little one is way more active. Could I be having contractions this early in my pregnancy? I am 22 weeks and 4 days pregnant. Should I call my OBGYN?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called my OBGYN office and the nurse told me that it was o.k. but if the pain started to get worse for me to go to the hospital. So I guess it's just an waiting game. I go in to my OBGYN on January 4 for my regular check up so I will tell him then.

i am a labor and delivery nurse so lets see if i can help at all...first of all yes they could be contractions. when you notice them, eat something, drink lots of fluids, and walk around for a bit. also you can take 650 mg tylenol safely and 25 mg benedryl if the tylenol alone doesnt help. if they go away with all of these suggestions it is either braxton hicks (your body preparing for true labor) or round ligament pains (which will come and go based on your stage of pregnancy. are you having trouble urinating? sometimes a mild urinary tract infection can cause contractions and pain in your lower back(flank pain which is where your kidneys are)drink lots and lots of water. if none of this helps your symptoms go to the doctor and let them run an nst (non stress test- shows baby heart rate and your uterus activity to see if you are truly contracting. good luck!

Could be Braxton Hicks - I had those very early with my first. She also liked being face up - was even born that way - so it meant she was pounding the crud out of my lower spine. Call your doc if there've been any sudden changes, or if you "just wanna know". You wouldn't be the first, and you're better safe than sorry. A phonecall and chat with the nurse doesnt take too long, and if they feel that its a concern, they'll have you come in and get checked out. Congrats, enjoy the hiccups... :}

Never hesitate to call the OBGYN's office is you have a question. They will know your medical history better than any of us. I was often uncomfortable but follow your gut feeling and call the dr. whenever you are worried. The nurses are used to this happening, especially with first time moms.

When in doubt, always call your obgyn. It may mean nothing. So if that is the case you'll feel better. However, if it may be something serious, you need to catch it as quickly as possible. It is a good sign that your baby is active, but I would call if I were you.

Yes, call and go in. I started contracting just like that with my second pregnancy at 18 weeks, so I was put on medication (magnesium) and told to limit my activity some. I now have a beautiful daughter who decided to come 2 weeks early, shortly after stopping the medication. The bright side is all the contractions prepare your uterus for an easier delivery.
Best of luck to you!

There's nothing wrong with calling your doctor just to be sure. If you're ever in doubt or concerned about anything, call. They are accustomed to many questions and you can tell the nurse all the symptoms they she should know if you need to come in.

I'm sure everything is fine, but listen to yourself and if you're worried, give a call.

it could be braxton hicks...i had those very early on with my kids, and i ended up going way over my due date with both. I wouldnt worry about it unless they are comming in a timely fashion. You are the mom and your gut will tell you what to do.

Hi, I'm an RN and actually, it could be Braxton Hicks but to be on the safe side, I would call your OB and tell them what you are feeling. Anytime you feel something that is out of the ordinary, its a good idea to let them know. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!
