Hypnobirthing

I just found out about something called hypnobirthing. It is when a woman going into labor puts herself under hypnosis. She gets herself into such a calming state that she can give birth naturally, pain-free! I watched some live videos of women doing this, and it's absolutely amazing. I was wondering if anyone has tried this or known anyone who has. If so, what were their experiences, and do they reccommend any doctors or midwives who practice it in a hospital. Thank you!

What can I do next?

I took 4 out of 5 of the hypnobirthing classes I found on hypnobirthing.com. My educator was horrible! If you take classes I can not stress enough to interview a couple people prior to paying for anything. My classes were $200 for group or $300 for private. We opted for private. The book Hypnobirthing has everything I learned in class, but one small piece of breathing advice. If you read the book let me know and I will give you the advice. Otherwise it will not make sense.

I expect to pop over the next couple of weeks. I will let you know how it goes. I will let you in on a secret, I am super uptight so if it works for me anyone can do it.

Hey K. - This is C. again, from the yoga question. Talk to Lotte about the hypnobirthing, she can probably put you in touch with other moms. Several did it in my group, some were successful, others not so much...Good luck!

Dear K.,
I have a good friend who was really into this method for her first child, and was almost successful. In the end she had the epidural anyway. From what I learned, unless you are "into" meditation and are able to focus your mind powerfully, it may not be the way to go. My friend has been practicing meditation for 20 years, but still needed the drugs. She still had a positive experience, and raves about having a doula, but I know I personally would never try it, simply from a cost-benefit perspective. (The courses are expensive!) In the end, you have to do what's best for YOU.

Good luck!

HI K....I used hypnobirthing with my son (first child...and only at the moment). I don't know that you need to be a meditation expert to be successful...I think it has more to do with really believing that it will work and not buying into the common idea that childbirth has to be painful. I love the concept, love the idea and think it works. My son was turned and I experienced back labor when I had him, also, my labor wasn't progressing to a regular pattern in the beginning. I had a great midwife (from an ob group) that was very supportive of what I was working to accomplish. The back labor made the hypnobirthing challenging for me, but I know that the hypnobirthing was what allowed me to be relaxed and even cracking jokes between contractions. I didn't have the epidural though I thought seriously about it at times. From what I have heard, back labor is a big reason many first time moms have c -sections. I did give birth naturally, with no drugs. I do attribute it to hypnobirthing. If I had it to do again, I would definitely have had a doula there to help me focus and help keep me in birthing positions that I wanted (somehow, I wound up on my back pushing which was absolutely NOT what I wanted at all). Also I know to stay on all fours even though very uncomfortable, to help the baby turn and situate himself the right way much earlier in the process.

I hope that helps. I don't remember the cost of the program, but I don't recall it being all that high really. I think what you put in is what you get out. It will educate you and help you learn that giving birth does not have to be the tortured war story you so often hear about. It is a beautiful process that your body knows how to handle...it's all about getting your mind and your fears out of the way.

Hope that helps! Feel free to send me a message if you'd like more info or to talk more about it. Thanks!

Dear K.,

as a Doula i had a lot of clients that have used Hypnobirthing for their Birthing experience. It is an amazing thing. You can teach it yourself with a special book and CD or take a class together with your partner. As a Doula i know the special terminology of Hypnobirthing and have supported many of my clients to have the birthing experience they dreamed of. It is not really connected to a doctor. Your Healthcare Provider should just be supportive of your choices. Hypnobirthing Births are very quiet and calm. What a wonderful possibility!
