Hyperhydrosis

Hi Moms. I need some help! I have this issue with excessive sweating. I guess it is called Hyperhydrosis. I only have it in my underarms. I've heard that people can suffer with it in their hands and feet as well, but mine is only underarms. It is very frustrating. I soak shirts and I'll have an odor in my underarm area only hours after a shower. I've tried tons of antiperspirant/deo. I am currently using an antibacterial cleanser called Hibiclens(to help with the odor) and Drysol (a prescription antiperspirant). I was using Certian Dri before that and it did not work at all. I just got the Drysol a few days ago so I can't totally dismiss it as a possitility yet, but I wanted to know if anyone had any luck with anything else. I saw a book online called "Stop Sweating and Start Living" but it was like 40 bucks and I have no clue if what it says would work. I've seen that there are herbs or pills that may work too, but I wanted to know if anyone had any success with the book or Drysol, or herbs, or pills or anything. I'm desperate for a solution! Any ideas? Anyone read that book? Anyone use Drysol? Do you have to wrap your underarms in plastic after you put it on or is that only for the hands or feet? My doc said to do the plastic but everything I read says that's only if you are using it on hands and feet. Anyway, thanks for the help. It is a very embarassing issue to deal with.

What can I do next?

I have a similar issue. I have started using Degree Clinical Protection and I put it on at night and in the morning and it works really well, so you might try that.

hey C., i don't have any suggestions but want to tell you that you are not the only one out there. i have been like that since 8th grade!!! and i am now 26 yrs old. if you find some helpful advise or anything, please let me know. i feel like i've run out of options since i don't really want to get botox injections in my armpits, sounds painful and if it only last's for 6 months or so then i don't know that it would be cost affective at all. good luck to you, i hope someone out there has a good suggestion.

Certain Dri - sold at WalGreens

also I got a free sample of a similar product from Secret. It smells really good!

You apply both products at night and don't need to apply them only once a week maybe after your perspiration slows down.

I think it works well but everyone is different :)

I have to chime in about the Drysol, even though you won't want to hear it. I'm convinced it had something to do with my husband's cancer 6 years ago (he's fine now), so I can't just keep quiet. He was having the same problem and used Drysol on and off for a while, then a year or so later had a malignant tumor near his armpit. It definitely helped the sweating, but I've since become an informal student of natural approaches and foods, and I've learned that it's very dangerous to suppress the sweating reaction. Sweating gets a lot of toxins out of your body, so if you're purposely holding it in there, you could be asking for trouble. The thing that helped most with his excessive sweating was when he lost 20+ pounds. As for odor, I make a deoderant out of equal parts of baking soda, arrowroot powder, and coconut oil. Just mix them together, add a couple drops of an essential oil for fragrance if you want, and use it like a lotion on your underarms. I've tried every kind of product in health food stores (to avoid aluminum, etc.) and they all left me stinky after just a short time, but this works all day long. My good friends have gotten a kick out of me coming up to them in the late evening and having them smell my pits because they still smell good! Only my really good friends. :)

I do recommend googling "natural remedy sweating" and see if you can dig up something that would be safer and still help your problem, but see if you can find a balance where you're still sweating some during exercise, etc. My two cents!

In addition to some of the products others have listed, I have one tip that helped me. Working out first thing in the morning. I found that by sweating a lot first thing, then showering, my sweat glands seem to calm down just a little during the day. I don't know if this will work for others and it isn't based on science, just my own experience.

Good luck!

I don't know if this is an option for you. I did watch a show on tv about people with similar problems. They went to a plastic surgeon and had botox injected into their sweat glands. It can subside sweating for up to 6 months. It might be an expensive option but you may want to look into it. It was extrmely helpful for the people who used it.

Hi C.,
I know where you are coming from as I also suffer from this. I have been using drysol for the last 7 years and it does work for me. I have to apply it once or twice a week when it is hot out. I do not wrap my underarms in plastic. Tried that the first time I used it and it was not a pretty site LOL. I work with the public so sweating excessively was not going to cut it and nothing else worked for me. I do notice a little stinging and/or itching when I first apply it but it is tolerable as the alternative is not to use it and sweat like crazy. I hope that you are able to find some relief as I know how humilating this condition can be.

This is just a suggestion, but have you contacted your local library to see if they have the book? A lot of times they might and if not request they get it. You might be able to get the book cheaper at a local book store, and if someplace like Border's has it in stock you can always go there, sit in the reading section with a drink and read it there.
Just a suggestion.
Luckily I have only developed a little of the problem and it is my forehead in the last year when it is extremely humid. I can walk outside to start the lawn mower and have sweat pouring into my eyes when it is only 72 degrees out. Gardening, walking, etc., are no longer the joy they have always been!
I will be praying for you. Trying to wrap my armpits in plastic sounds like a real treat to me! I am smiling here at the mental image of doing this! I am trying to keep a sense of humor about what I know to be a really frustrating situation/problem for you!!!

Hi C.,

I like the idea of getting the book at your library first to see if it is worth buying; they can, as the other respondent said, get it for you through inter-library loan. the "read it in Border's" idea is also not bad! If you decide you want the book be sure to check for it on ebay, half.com etc. You might find it in used - book stores also. Good luck!

Hi there. I have no clue if this really works (or if it is even possible (financially)) but I saw on TV that people could have Botox injected into the armpits and it is supposed to last 6 months of no sweating. Like I said... don't know all the details, just saw it on TV.

I have the same problem. It actually started just a few months ago. I would shower and in less than an hour I smelled bad and my armpit areas was soaked. I bought Degree Prscription strength and it works wonders. I still sweat A LITTLE when I'm outside working but no odor and no excessive sweat. It cost me $8.00 on sale (originally $10-$11) but it has been worth it. I figured it wouldn't hurt compared to doctor bills and prescription costs. It only use 2 clicks at bedtime and I also apply it in the morning. I can't believe how using so little works so well. Lots of luck!!! :)

Hi C.,
I personally don't have this problem, but my sister does. She can't afford the prescription anti-perspirant, so she uses Secret Clinical Strength. She said it is pricey, but it does help and she has to reapply it throughout the day. She wasn't impressed with the Degree Clinical Strength at all. I hope this helps.

All my best!

Hi C.,

There is a hopeful natural remedy. Chlorophyll, in liquid or capsule form, is availabe on the market (usu. in health food stores/ sections) and it is a concentrate supplement, derived from alfalfa, I believe. It is know for it's "internal cleansing properties" and acts as a natural deoderizer-- from the inside out. There is a great deal of information and literature avail. about chlorophyll. I'm not sure that it may impact excessive sweating, but it might interest you to check out.

I feel your pain! I have more of a stink problem than a sweat problem. I've tried every deodorant/antiperspirant out there and was using Secret prescription strength and nothing worked. Also read that the aluminum in antiperspirant could be cancer causing. But, after doing a lot of research on the internet here is what I've found works best for me. Use a deodorant soap and washcloth, not just your hand, to wash your underarms in the shower, then after shower wipe with an alcohol soaked cotton ball, then I use a crystal deod. (which is supposed to be antibacterial, but frankly, I'm not sure it does too much) and then if it's a really hot day, sprinkle on some baking soda or corn starch powder. Sometimes I have to do this a couple of times a day. I know it sounds like a lot but it really isn't. But, I feel like it's healthier and, I'm saving a ton on expensive deodorants! Good luck!

Hey C.!

If the Drysol doesn't work, generally the next step is a medicine called Robinul Forte. It is actually for acid reflux, but it works on the same receptors that are in the sweat glands that stimulate secretions. Then....if a 3 month or so trial of Robinul forte doesn't work, we do try to get coverage for Botox injections (which only need to be done twice yearly).

Hope that helps!

I always sweat in the underarm, nothing every worked. About six months ago I purchased Secret Clinical Strength. It has worked very well for me. Reduced the wet armpits in clothes, eliminated the odor, and doesn't leave white marks. It costs about $7 for a small stick and $12 for the larger at most every retailer. It's the white kind, but it's in a pop up (click turn) stick (kinda creamy rather than the hard white antiperspirant). Maybe you can check the web and see if Secret offers a free sample. I don't have excessive sweating, but I do sweat enough to leave wet marks and leave my shirts with an unpleasant odor. Not any more, it has worked great for me. Good luck! B.

Hi C.,

I had the same problem! I would sweat so bad it would literally just run down my sides. It was awful and embarrassing. I used the Drysol (did not wrap with plastic) and it was fantastic! I haven't had a problem with sweating in over 6 years and I've been off the Drysol for at least 6 months if not longer. I'd encourage you to stick with the Drysol for a bit and see what happens before buying a $40 book. Hang in there - you CAN beat this!!!

I developed excessive sweating in my underarms too. I use Drysol, did not wrap with plastic wrap. It has worked wonders for me. I only have to use it about once or twice a month now and as long as I am careful to apply it only to the area where hair would grow and not all over I don't have problems with irritation.

My husband had that same problem. He ended up using Aluminu Chloride (Hexahydrate 20%)(which could be Drysol) perscribed by a Dr. He did the wrapping in plastic thing, but then just let it dry thoroughly. He used it for a couple of years (sparingly) and now he doesn't need it at all. Eventually it seemed to have shrunk his sweat glands in his arm pits. He only uses deodorant now. Good luck!

I have two adult daughters that used a prescription on their underarms that was supposed to paralyze the sweat glands. I guess it really stung, but they only had to use it for a few months. Neither one had to wrap in plastic.

I don't see how herbs can work, but maybe it will make your sweat smell better...or worse, depending on the herbs! good luck
