I never knew store bought tortillas were so terrible for you--hydroginated oils i guess. Anyhow, I'm wondering how easy it is to make homemade ones, I checked out one online recipe that involved somefancy mexican flour and a press etc etc. Is it that complicated?? Do any of you real moms make your own?? and how??

What can I do next?

Homemade tortillas are so easy to make. You don't need special flour- you can use whit flour or wheat. I never made corn tortillas. The way my grandmother made them, she would mix the baking soda and salt in with the flour first then cut the Crisco (she used lard) into it with a fork until it's blended well. Add water til you get a consistency that can be kneaded but not too sticky. Break into balls and roll on a floured surface til very flat, then cook on med-high heat in a dry skillet, flipping over when one side is browned. Sorry, I don't have measurements - I don't measure, but I'm sure you could find a basic recipe on the internet. No need for a press, when you have your hands to flatten them, or a rolling pin or even a glass.

I don't make my own, I just buy the homemade ones from my local bodega or swap-meet!

We make our own ones all the time - I learned from my Grandma growing up. Use 4 cups of flour with one teaspoon of salt, cut in 1/2 cup of crisco, with a fork or pastry cutter. Then slowly mix in 1 1/4 cups of warm water with your hands. Let it sit for at least a half hour, break off a small fistfull and roll into a ball. Then roll out. Cook on medium heat over a griddle or frying pan on the stove. The dough can last up to a week in the fridge. Just warm to room temp when you want to roll out more. They taste SOOOO much better homemade and are very simple. We usually only cook them when we want to eat them so we save leftover dough and use them throughout the week for things like breakfast burritos. Good luck!

My husband makes these with our kids pretty regularly. Whenever they see a rolling pin, they shriek, "Tortillas!"

My husband puts regular white flour, salt, oil (any liquid oil), and water in a bowl. He mixes it together with his hands, adding more flour or water as he thinks necessary. Then he tears off a chunk, rolls it into a ball, and starts rolling with the rolling pin, using flour to keep it from sticking.

He cooks the tortillas in a hot pan (medium to medium-high heat) that is very lightly coated with oil. (He puts a few drops in the pan and then uses a paper towel to evenly coat the pan.) A few minutes on each side, and they're done... and delicious!

***By the way, Crisco is hydrogenated oil. So if you are trying to avoid hydrogenated oil, please do not use Crisco. My parents were trying to avoid hydrogenated oil after all they'd heard about it, but they still were using Crisco because they didn't know what it was.

You can buy corn flour. I believe they sell it at walmart. You may need to go to a store which specializes in spanish food,etc.. You can buy a tortilla press. The directions are on the bag. Once you mix it together, you need to heat up frying pan with no oil. You then cook the tortillas in the hot pan. When using the tortilla press use wax paper as the dough is very sticky. Put one piece of wax paper on either side of the tortilla press and press down. I used to make them all the time but it is a mess but they taste great.

I used to make my own all the time. I just used flour, water, oil, salt and baking powder. Roll it out and cook on both sides. I started buying the ones at Costco where they are raw and you cook it for the first time. They are already rolled out and all you do is cook them in a pan for a minute on each side. They're delicious!!

If you want to go really healthy, try Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Grain Tortillas. An acquired taste, very different than the regular bad-for-you white flour tortillas. But they are soooo good for you and I love them now!

you only need the "fancy" mexican flour for corn tortillas. You use regular flour for flour tortillas.
