HI someone recommended this site, I'm enjoying it alot so far. I need advice on a new vaccuum cleaner. I have kids and hairy pets and lots of carpeting on both floors. I'm looking at dyson's reviews on amazon but i'm getting confused. Is there a good site that will compare vaccuums? something like consumer report that you don't have to subscribe to??? Or if anyone can recommend a vaccum that will fit my needs i would appreaciate it. thanks

I bought my Dyson Ball two years ago from Overstocks.com. My only regret is not having bought it sooner. Best vacuum I ever bought (in a house with two Golden Retrievers and three teenagers).

Honestly, my guy (who is a computer engineer and an all around mechanical/technological junkie), is so impressed by it's engineering that he asks to vacuum!

:)

(btw, Overstocks has their own customer product review, too)

I LOVE Dyson, but can't afford it. My SIL (sister in law) found one at Big Lots (kinda jealous!)... I have the Bissle Pet Vac... it's awesome. It's lasted waaaay longer than any of my other vaccums! I have long hair, and a tendency to catch vacuums on fire (seriously!)... this one I've had for about 3 years and it still works like new!!

Go with a Dyson....any model. You won't regret it. I promise.
Got mine at Target and got a $100 gift card -- wait for a promotion like that...they are pricey.

Consumer reports is really good. We finally bit the bullet and subscribed to it and it's worth it! But, we did recently buy a Dyson so I'll give you my opinion too.

We originally had a Bissell pet vacuum and I liked it. It lasted about 7 years before it just pretty much died. We have all hardwoods with only a couple of rugs, so I don't know how well it does on carpets but I imagine it would be fine.

This year we bought the Dyson, we also got the animal version of that. I really like it! I mostly like it b/c it swivels and it's super light weight. I also like how you empty the container. As far as actual vacuuming it's pretty similar to the Bissell but the other features make it worthwhile. We bought ours at Bed Bath and Beyond and used the 20% off coupon taking off a good chunk of change.

You could try Good Housekeeping to see what they have given their seal to. My friend has a dyson animal and she loves it. She has two golden retrievers that shed a lot and I never see much hair when I am over her house. I would love a dyson...maybe when mine breaks.

Glad you could join us!

I find the stores website useful for reviews. They are buying directly from them so if there was a customer service issue you are at least seeing that as well as the product review.

I have a Kirby and love it. I have heard mixed reviews on the Dyson and until my kirby passes away... I am sticking with it.

Good luck!

Hello ~ welcome!
I just recently purchased a new vacuum too. I didn't have the $ for a Dyson and settled on the Hoover Pet Cyclonic vacuum and I absolutely love it!!!! http://www.yourelectroshop.com/product_info.php?products_...
The only con I have found so far is that it is a heavy vacuum.
Good luck finding the right one for you!

I have a Dyson and I HATE IT. My sister has had two of them. She recently replaced it because of flooding in her house, not because of a fault of the product. I think it is awfully heavy and I have to push down on the actual vacuum part to make it work properly. I may have gotten a 'lemon' so certainly don't invest 100% in my view of it. I really wanted an Oreck since they are light weight. In my personal opinion, I think the cannister leave more dust behind just in the emptying process. Had I not gotten the Dyson as a gift, I would've never owned one.

Like others, I have gone to store websites and often you can compare (like Best Buy, HH Gregg, or maybe even Walmort or Target). Good luck and happy cleaning.

Welcome....and I love, love, love many more loves than three my Dyson Animal...I've had it for 7 years...no issues with it, no break downs. I clean the brush once a month (takes about five minutes). We had two large dogs (one Husky/Lab and one Lab/Shar Pei)...lots and lots of hair.

Spent about $500 for it...and when/if it ever breaks down...I will replace it with the same one!

Welcome!

I have an Oreck, love it! I paid about $800 but I love it. So lightweight, easy to use. I take it in once a year for tune-up/ cleaning.

My mom has a Dyson and hates it because it's so bulky and heavy.

I have a Dyson. Its a DC14, it was a birthday gift Aug of 2005. So, I've had it for 6 years. I'm a bad Dyson owner and I never change the filter. Oops. But, the vacuum doesnt seem to care. It works just as good today as it did in 2005.
We recently tore up our carpets and now we have hardwood floors in all but the kids room. The Dyson works great on both types of floors. I even vacuum the kitchen! :)

Its a great vacuum and if it ever dies, I'll get another one.

what ever you buy, I would buy from Bed, Bath and Beyond. They have a no fuss return policy (just keep the box and receipt) and if and when it breaks, they will exchange it for a new one.

I pesonally have a Kirby (talked them down to $700.00), and it's great, but bags are expensive.

Miele wins in consumer report testing all over the world again and again. The initial expense is more, but they truly last and work great. We are on our second in 25 years and I use the darn thing daily (we have dogs).

Love my blue Bissell Workforce. Hate my Hoover Wide path. Got the Bissell at Walmart for $46 and didn't expect it to be that good. It's easy to use, nice long cord, easy to clean, washable filters, picks up dog and cat fur "like no tomorrow, " pretty to look at, can use it on my hardwood floors while wearing flip flops and not have any dirt thrown back into my toes, etc. Love it!

I work as a housecleaner for 3 years and I use a Kenmore Canister. It is very easy to operate and does the job very well. I feel like crying when a homeowner comes to me and asks me to use her Dyson because it is great with dog hair and dust, etc. It is heavy and it doesn't pick up a piece of thread from the carpet. It might be great with hair and dust, but not with anything else! Also, to connect the hand brush, for example, you have to push a button here, pull a hose there... and with my canister the only thing I have to do is disconnect the wand and do it, in a snap. If you need to vac under the bed, for example, or if you want to reach the corners, get a canister. I also use Miele and Sebo in some houses. Miele is very good, but to connect the carpet part, you have to connect the wire to the wand too, which is more work than only connecting to the wand. From my experience, say no to uprights. Hope I was helpful.

I love my Kenmore Cannister Vac. I does great with wall to wall carpeting, some hardwood, linoleum in the kitchen, a toddler who loves cheerios and two cats. About $329 5 years ago. Sears lets you compare online side-by-side.
