Hemangioma - Curiosity Question

My little one has a hemangioma on his face which obviously we have been monitoring with the assistance of our pediatrician. We are not treating it and are completely unconcerned about it. However, my husband and I are curious about any "real life" answers to the question of how long until it goes away. We know the medical textbook answers so we just wanted to hear some experience answers. Thanks.

We thank everyone for their generosity in replying to our curiosity question. It helps to hear human stories and not all the medical mumbo jumbo. Again thanks.

My daughter has one on the side of her nose, I think it's adorable :) She's 6 now, it's more faded now than it was at birth, but you can still tell it's there. It's just now starting to bother her, but I told her that her sister and I have freckles, SHE gets a beauty mark on her nose :)

My daughter had one on the back of her neck. I think it was first noticed around 3 months of age. She was hospitalized for the first 6 months, so there was so much going on, I cannot remember when it disappeared but it did! In just a few months.

It scared me to death when I first saw it but I was told it would "go away" and it did! I'm almost positive it was gone before she came home, so my estimate is 3 months. It was about the size of a golf ball.

My son is on a medicine to lower his heart rate and blood pressure and at his last checkup his Dr mentioned that he has a patient that was put on the same medicine to help with a hemangioma. (I think that's what he said it was anyway :o) ) I thought that was really interesting that it was used for that! It's called Propranolol if you want to ask the dr about it. (That's the generic name)
Good Luck! :o)

I was born with a hemangioma on my right eyelid which grew quite large and was surgically removed when I was about a year old. Other than a slightly sagging eyelid, I have suffered no other negative effects. I think the only reason it was removed was because of its location and size. I wish I could attach a picture to ease your mind. Good luck to you and yours.

BTW--8kidsdad....really? What was the point of that post?! Go away if you have nothing better to contribute.

Our daughter has one on her cheek. She is only 4.5 months, so it is quite visible at this point. We just went to the dermatologist for an evaluation. He said that it could take up to 10 years (worst case), but that he thinks it will be gone by 2.5/3 years.

My best friends son had a very large one on his jaw line. He is 1.5 and it is almost gone!

According to what our dermatologist said, it should definitely be gone by 10 for sure, but more likely be gone by school age

The Pediatrician, should send you to a Dermatologist specialist.

Where does your son have it on his face?
This also impacts the status of it... per blood vessels etc., that it can be on. Because it can be connected to the circulatory system/vessels and be filled with blood. For example.

My Husband had one on his forehead as a child.
When he was a child, they did surgery on it and removed it.
BUT... a Specialist Surgeon did it. BECAUSE, the surgeon had to KNOW... how to remove it, so that as he got older and the removed portion healed, that it did not 'pull' the skin in an awkward way, for example. He had to also have a small skin graft on it, so that there would be enough skin, to stretch over it and heal without pulling the skin in a weird way.
Although nowadays, there are probably more 'modern' ways of treating it or it goes away on its own.

Again, the Ped should be sending you to a Specialist. Ultimately.

My son had one right below his lower eyelid, it was only about the size of a pencil eraser and not got very raised. It started showing up at about 2weeks of age. Then I could see it was starting to break-up a little, looking more pink in the center, at about 9-10 months and it was gone completely by 15 months or so. He is 4 now and your would never know it had been there.

My niece also has one, hers is on her back. It has actually been mistaken for a fruit snack stuck to her, so that is about the size in diameter and height. I remember it being flatish when she was very little, i'm sure when or how fast it became raised. She is just over 1 year and it has been unchanged (neither bigger or smaller) for several months. They are just monitoring it, not doing anything to "treat" it.

My niece had quite a large one on her forehead. It started small at birth and grew to the size of a small ball by age one. As a girl, and given that even bangs could not cover it, the parents decided to have it removed by a special surgeon when she was young. It went fine. Whatever you decide, i do agree that you should get a second opinion.
Best of Luck, J.

When my daughter was 6 it was flat. When she turned 10 it was only visible as a few faint pink dots. It was on her back and larger than a golf ball. I was told you never treat them unless they interfere with vision or something like that.

Both my kids had a small one. They probably stayed as long as 6-10 months before finally fading.

When I was little, I had what my mom called a "strawberry mark" on my forehead,I don't know if it was the same kind of thing. I see it in pictures when I was a baby, but in later pictures I grew long bangs that hid it, so I'm not sure exactly when it faded. Maybe it was in elementary school. You can't tell now that it was ever a red spot, but the skin in that area does feel slightly different.

My daughter's (on her lip) is starting to shrink and flatten already. She's 13mos. The doctor estimates that it will be totally flat by the age of 2.

My little one (3 y/o) has 2 hemangioma's. The one on his cheek looks more like a broken blood vessel and he has had since he was very little. Our doc said by 6 or 7 it should fade drastically, if not completely. He also has one on his eyelid. He had to have eye testing done to make sure it wasn't damaging his eyesight. It's fine. It didn't show up until about 1.5 years ago and at first looked like a little mole but started to slowly get bigger and redder. It has stopped growing and has faded quite a bit. Our doctor says this one should fade and eventually get smaller and flatten.

My son had a small one on his face. He's 4 now, and there's no sign of it. I think it was completely gone by age 2, but I can't remember for sure.
