I wondering if anyone knows of any type of rental or financial assistance for single moms. I do have a job and make ok money but my sons father screwed me! I found out that he wasn't paying the rent! He was taking my share and doing whatever with it! I ended up getting evicted because I couldnt catch up. So now I have an eviction on my credit so I can't get another apt. I living in a friends unfinished basement for the time being. I have filed for child support but it takes a while. That won't be much of anything anyway. I just need some help to get me back on my feet. Any suggestions??

What can I do next?

Go to the State and file for public assistance. They can help you find resources for housing, food, child care and anything else you need.

Go to this website:

http://dhr.maryland.gov/ssa/family/

It is the In-Home Family Preservation website on the Human Resources page for the State of Maryland. Specifically, "In-Home Family Preservation represents a continuum of programs available within the local departments of social services. These programs are specifically identified for families in crisis whose children are at risk of out-of-home placement."

Hope this helps!!

Do you attend church? Try there as they are resources many times to help those in your situation. Also, they may be able to refer you to some food pantries in your area. Have you applied for any assistance with the State?

i know that in florida the state offers housing assistance to people who don't own their own homes. my sister has it. its based on income and number of family members. if it's 2 of you then you can get like a 2 bedroom home and up to a certain amount of rent. they will pay some and then you pay the difference. you should check to see if your state offers this.

Contact Social Services, there's Hud, section 8 and rental ssistance. There are also Luthern and Catholic Charities and The Salvation Army. You may also qualify for Food Stamps which will give you moremoney to pay rent. Social Services should have all the info on what is available to you.
Can you take him to small claims court to get your money back?

You have some great advice. I'd also like to add that there is a lot of assisstance to single moms going to school. Help with rent, utilties, child care, food, as well as books and tution. That way you never find yourself in this position again. The best place to start is the advising and counseling department of your closest community college.

Hello. Sorry to hear about your situation. As stated before, you have received a lot of good advice. I would also try looking for private renters. People who are renting house or apts. and they don't do credit checks. Mostly what they are looking for is good references. And since you have been living in your friend's basement, you can list that as your last place of residence. This will allow you time to work on getting that eviction billed paid. Then later you can find something a little better.

Be blessed!

Dear LH - I'm so sorry to hear of your predicament! What a louse. I would think Social Services could be of some help. Do you belong to a church? Maybe they could help as well. I'm not sure if this would be for you, but my business is helping people earn supplemental income. Contact me if you'd like more info. Wishing you all the best!

I don't know really, but a couple of things. 1.) DC law is a lot more pro-renter than MD law, 2.) I think if you get someone to co-sign your lease for you then you shouldn't have much trouble getting an apartment, 3.) check out apartment buildings that are designed to provide affordable housing in communities. All the best. I know it has to be tough, but you'll be fine!
