I've been having trouble breathing like someone is sitting on my chest. Won't go away and a couple of times recently I have gotten dizzy and racing heart.

I am 21 weeks pregnant w/ my second child and had anxiety issues before my last preg but it went away while I was preg. These feel like anxiety attacks except no racing heartbeat. Just the breathing thing.

I'm typing this on my phone so sorry anout typos and grammer! Any suggestions?I'm calling the dr tomorrow but just need some ideas just in case I can't get through to them right away

What can I do next?

I have had it with all 3 pregnancies, and I also have anxiety. Make sure you drink LOTS of water, the first time it happened, I went to the hospital and they said I was a little dehydrated. Its probably ok, just take it easy, drink lots of water and see what the doc says tomorrow.

Get tested for asthma. Asthma is an anxiety disease which appears sometimes in pregnancy and then goes away. Other times it just sticks around. You have to take meds that go well with pregnancy so you need an EXPERT which is not usually the OB/GYN.
Asthma is a specialty in and of itself. Now that said. I found a homeopath's homeopath who treated me for the anxiety and I am no longer asthmatic. It's four years now. I wore that disease for half my life and am I happy to have gotten rid of it.
I saw many homeopaths but none were of his calibre though many came highly recommended.
Do you have a cat? He has to live outside while you are pregnant and maybe forever. The little sweeties are very often implicated in asthma and anxiety.

Glad you will talk to your doc tomorrow.
I suspect it is a combo of anxiety (I deal with that), needing more fluids and how the baby is sitting!
When my first pregnancy they sent me off for all sorts of tests and even an in depth heart study and had to wear a monitor and all this junk.... but in the end it was anxiety and how the baby was laying.
It got better towards the end, but not 100% gone. I didn't deal so much with my second...
Good luck with the doc tomorrow and just try and relax some. Of course if it gets worse, head to the ER asap!

Oh man, I remember this! It was a little unnerving to experience it. I would be sitting there and then all of a sudden I would be breathing heavy like I just ran a race (although my heart would be pounding in my chest, too). I would be hard to catch my breath and speak normally.

I spoke with my doctor about this and he said that it sometimes happens. He recommended drinking ice cold water or Gatorade when it happened. I have no idea why, but I was willing to give it a shot. I did help somewhat. Fortunately, mine only lasted during the first trimester and then it abruptly ended.

Good luck - I know it can be scary! Just talk to your doctor for more information and make sure it isn't something else more serious.

This is not..I repeat NOT a question for mamapedia. This is a serious question for your doctor and NOW. Any time you have difficulty breathing that is a medical emergency. It could be a minor heart arrythmia, a prolapsed valve in your heart, a pulmonary issue. or anything. SEE YOU DOCTOR NOW. Call him ASAP. Please. I am not an alarmist..just a registered nurse with 32 years of experience. God Bless.

It is normal to have some shortness of breath during pregnancy but combined w/ the dizziness you definately need to speak to your doctor as there are so many other things (some serious, some not). Get checked out for the best interest of both you and your child.

I'm on my second pregnancy as well. I too have shortness of breath. I had it with my first son as well. I know we're producing double the amount of blood we used to and I think it's a result of that. Not to mention the fact that we're carrying around a baby and our insides are being pushed around to make room for our precious little bundles. I will tell you that I've had some dizziness with mine too--only because I overexert myself combined with the shortness of breath. The racing heart you definitely should get checked out. I do have heart palpitations from time to time which is fairly common in pregnant women. I had more of them earlier on and my nurse practitioner told me to cut back on the caffeine. Not sure how much caffeine you've been drinking. I know we're allowed 200 mgs a day. However, if you're getting that, you may cut it in half. It helped with my heart issue. Always best to mention anything related to your heart to your doc though. Good luck!!
