My 16 year old niece has requested a "handbag and not a purse" as a gift. I have no idea what she means. What's in style these days? What are teenagers carrying? Any websites, stores, brands that I should check out? Thanks.

What can I do next?

I'm not as in-the-know as a teenager, but I am pretty sure she's referring to it as a handbag because that is what the Hollywood crowd calls them. I'd take her with you to the mall and ask her to show you what is "hot" right now--ask her if she likes something like Kooba or more mainstream like Coach. From the other responders, sounds like Coach is popular. If she is the type that will take care of her "handbag" for years and not toss it aside in two months, and you don't mind dishing out a few hundred bucks, a Coach might be your ticket. Botkier is a popular Hollywood brand, which I love, but they run $500+. And Kooba! I love Kooba--you can find them at Nieman Marcus. Michael Kors makes a line of chic bags, available around $350-$500 (but the price can go WAY higher). There is a Michael Kors boutique at Northpark mall in Dallas. Some trendy websites you can check our are shopkitson.com, lisakline.com, and eluxury.com. Let me know if you have any questions! I love to chat fashion (although you'd never guess it buy my usual SAHM attire, ha!)

I do not know the difference on handbag/purse. I do have a 13 yr old and the "IN" thing right now is Coach. My dd and most all of her friends have at least 1 Coach. D & B is popular as well but not as much as the Coach products.

Pretty pricey......I don't think anything is less that $100 including wallets. The Coach charms are popular too.

The Coach store does not have sales but sometimes you can get a sale at Macy's or Dillards. A Coach outlet is supposed to be opening at the Allen Outlets but I have no idea when.

If you are still in doubt....I would go with a gift card and let her pick it out.

Good luck!

I think that "handbag" is the same as a purse, just a fancier way of saying it. I personally would not spend hundreds of dollars on a Coach bag for a teenager. The Coach outlet is not that great as far as prices go. Even their 50% off bags are still $300 or more. I would get her a gift card to nordstroms or macys and let her pick out something there.

Hello DD!

This is a rather late response, as I just came across your request. I liked the previously suggested idea with the gift card or going shopping together. Now in regard of handbag/purse: In the UK for instance, it is more common to say "Handbag" instead of "Purse". In England the word “purse’ is more used for the lady’s “pocket book/wallet?).”

Per the poster below, the Coach outlet in Allen at the Outlet Mall is now open. :) I too think that may be what your niece means...she would like a "designer handbag" and not a purse. :)

I would give her a gift certificate to get one. I for one would hate if someone got me a purse because I like a very specific design and if someone got me one I didn't like I would feel obligated to use it even though I didn't like it. Or if she dosen't like it and dosen't use it you'll feel bad.
