My lovely and smart 2nd grader just informed me that he's playing Humpty Dumpty in a play ... in two days.Does anyone have any idea how I can come up with a costume that fast? My sewing machine doesn't have a power cord but I do have cardboard boxes and white spray paint. Can anyone help me???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I called the teacher and it turns out only a few kids told their parents they need costumes. We decided on the stuffed white trash bag approach with a tie and his regular pants. He'll be so cute! I'll post pics on my family website and thank you very much for your help. When it comes to panic-mode my brain shuts down and doesn't work anymore, so I really appreciate all your input. Have a great day!

HELLO!

A white pillow case stuffed with newspaper or pillows. Cut holes for the feet and hands.
Add velcro to keep the top part shut around the top. Add accessories!
Have fun making the costume and attending the play!

Use a white tall kitchen garbage bag with the drawstrings, cut holes for the arms and legs, then stuff with paper, pillows, etc. You can even draw clothes on the bag and color with markers. Hope this helps, that's what I would do...

Stuffed Clothing
This is by far the easiest method. However, it takes a lot of effort to really make it look right.

To create the right look for your body, you will need a white lycra shirt or bodysuit, preferably one or two sizes too big. You will also need white tights or leggings.

To fill the top (i.e. the shirt or the top of the bodysuit), find whatever material you can use. If you have any kind of stuffing or packing material, use it. If not, you can always use pillows, towels, or small blankets. Stuff your clothing to make it look as egg-shaped as possible. Your body should end up looking like a big egg, with normal human arms and legs sticking out of it.

For Humpty's clothes. Try putting on a big pair of shorts on top of the white leggings, with a pair of colorful suspenders. You can wear a tie as well, for an elegant looking Humpty. If you really want to make the costume obvious, you can stitch or paint letters that spell out "Humpty Dumpty" across the front of your costume.

For the head, paint y

What about stuffing a white garbage bag, like the big ones that line kitchen garbage cans? I don't know what you might have that is lightweight to stuff it, perhaps a pillow from the bed? Then, white tights (if your boy will wear tights! Mine won't!)

Use a white pillow case. Fold the seemed side opening and glue in place. Put a hoodie string through and use it to tie the bottom. Make a hole for his head. Make arm holes where needed. Tie at his hips. He can wear shorts. Stuff the pillowcase after he's in it, with plastic bags, to round him out. Use the cardboard in various shapes when he breaks.

Have you considered paper mache? You could use a big ball/bowl/trash bag filled with paper to the shape you want as the mold. Paper Mache a little more than half. Leave leg holes on one half. And then paper mache another ball and leave arm & head hole. Or you could just use something as suspenders from the bottom. Have your child where and white shirt and tie with loud socks and shoes.

Paper mache can take along time to dry so go thin and put a fan on it.

You can get paste recipes off the internet.

Or use the cardboard box, cut out leg holes and use suspenders. Decorate the box as the pants.

Hope this gives you an idea.

I would go to a Home Depot near you and buy a 4'x8' sheet of styrofoam board near the insulation. It is pink and comes in different thicknesses. You could cut 2 pieces that look like an egg...one for front ...one for back. Paint them...cut a hole for the face...put a couple of holes in places to put a belt through and that will hold it on. The arms will stick out freely on the sides. Wear normal clothing under it. Hope that helps!

I know this will soon happen to me--
So I'm paying it forward . . .

Do you have an Easter outfit ready for this year yet?
Or -What did he wear last year?
If the pants are too short- that's OK- the style of costume that most Humptys have are with those shorter pants.

For the egg-head part-
Do you - or any family member have a white hoody/sweatshirt?
Especially if it were large. With a drawstring- even better.
Check out your local resale/goodwill if you don't have one.

No drawstring- try to make one - make 2 small holes (one on ea side) attach a safety pin to the string and inch it along inside till you get to the other end.

Stuff the hoody ( filler at the craft store isn't too expensive0. Paint his face white (sometimes the dollar stores have costume make-up.

Don't forget to let your fingers do the walking- Call first and save yourself some time.

Sometimes the simplest is best- no wardrobe mishaps. Everyone will know he is Humpty!

Good luck

Get a white pillow case & run a drawstring thru the open hemmed portion. Cut leg holes in the closed ens & arm holes in the sides. Use pillow stuffing (craft store, walmart)and he can easily step into this on the day of the performance. The drawstring can close up the top around his neck & give the egg shape. Also, the bottom portion can be pinned back to get rid of the corners, If he was a white hooded swirtshirt, or a white hat that will help along the look of the costume without him having to wear the pillowcase over is head.

Good Luck!

Before you go totally nuts trying to do this ask the teacher what she suggests. I would maybe use an old white pillow case. you can cut out holes for the arms. use a pair of white sweat pants for the legs and white long sleeve shirt. you can tie the bottom around his middle and stuff it with a pillow. he will look cute.
good luck. don't you love these kinds of projects. at least you got a couple nights. i love the "hey mom i need 47 cupcakes for today. i forgot".

Even dressing him in a pair of dark sweat pants and a long, white sleeve t-shirt and rounding out his middle section at his stomach and his back with a pillow or foam (and adding a striped tie and hat for the fun of it!) could give him an oval-egg quality. And... yes... as the previous post said, we complain now but just think, some day we may just miss these last minute requests that keep us up until 2 am! ("Mom, can you make... can you bake, can you sew... can you find.....?Oh...yeah... I forgot, my book report is due tomorrow... !!!! ARRRRgggghhh)

Good luck!
