Hi everyone,
This past weekend my son rolled is ankle while playing in his basketball game. The next day it looked really bad so I took him in and to find out he has torn open and fractured his growth plate in his ankle. He is on crutches and a cast now. We see his orthopedic surgeon today but I was wondering if any of your kids went through this. My son is 8 years old. I know I should not get on the computer and look stuff up because I only see the stuff that scares me but I read that it can make one leg shorter then the other or grow back in the wrong direction. Has anyone gone through this and have no problems at all?? My son is so active I feel terrible for him. He plays basketball,just started practice for baseball for the season,he is the running back on his football team. I'm just so worried now that if it doesn't grow back his love of sports will go down hill. I just really want to hear that the bad stuff is only a small % and most of the time it goes back normal. And how long did it take to recover? I know I'll get most these answers today at the apt. but just wanted to hear from someone that really went through it.

ok,so he is in the cast for 4 weeks and then we do xrays and go form there. Thankyou so much,I read what you had to say before I went into the apt and they made me feel so much better!!
I broke my growth plate in my ankle about the same age. I never had it casted or anything done other then an xray. I walk fine and my legs are normal. Just some good news for you

My daughter was very active and broke her growth plate in elementary school and was in a cast. She is now a junior in high school, takes care of and rides horses and is in tennis tournaments weekly. No problems here.
We just got done dealing with a growth plate issue too. It was her big toe and if you think about it your big toe does alot for you. She didn't fracture it, but the plate was displaced. She was in a boot for 6 weeks and it went back to normal. With a fractured plate, are they talking about possibly doing surgery? It will heal as long as you make sure to take the time to let it heal. Even after she came out of the boot she had to not run for 2 weeks, even though it was perfectly straight by then our doc was being cautious, which was fine with me.
It will heal just do everything the doc says to do, even though your son may argue about how long it takes, don't give in to him.
