In my experience, unless you're planning a party on a day that is completely separate from all the other graduation parties, the kids seem to love going from place to place, house to house. For example, if you have a party that is near the actual graduation date (that night, or the night before, or on that weekend), you can pretty much figure that a lot of your graduate's friends are also having parties and the kids kind of flow from house to house. So just have some festive balloons with the year (a big Mylar 2014 or 2013), balloons that reflect any specific interests or activities that your graduate has (a soccer ball balloon, for example) napkins and plates in the school colors, open house hours (drop by from 2 - 4 or 4 - 7 or whatever time works for you), and food that will keep, such as meatballs in a crockpot or chili in a crockpot or things like that. And if you plan on doing any kind of scrapbook or memory book, have a table out with blank scrapbook paper and pens so that your graduate's friends can write a message, write their favorite memories, or just sign their names. If you don't plan on a scrapbook, just get a blank book at a stationery store and have that out for messages and memories. Include pens in school colors and encourage doodles and impromptu art on the blank pages!

When my son graduated we had a joint party with 4 other guys he had gone to school with. Each family made a display (on a science backboard) of pictures of their son (&friends & family) as he was growing up. At the bottom was his high school graduation picture and below that was a picture of him in the Tshirt of the college that he had chosen. We decorated in the high school colors We rented a community center from 4-midnight. (they graduated early in the day) All afternoon family, friends and fellow grads came by and enjoyed looking at the pictures. When my daughter graduated I made the same type of poster, but we also did a slide show that ran in the background on the TV in the house. We did a Hawaiian theme and that seemed to be very popular.

To me, it all depends on budget.

If your talking about a party for your senior who is graduating we did a Hawaiian Luau theme for our kids.

party city has lots of great decorations cheap as does the dollar store for a luau theme. Food was bbq ribs, fruit kabobs, veggie trays and some salads like pasta salad, potato salad etc. mango salsa and chips. kids loved it.

For extended family? A video picture tribute of him growing up that streams continuously. Folk can view it at their leisure. Lots of buffet foods. Blow up pictures of him all over the house. Open the garage for young folk to congregate away from adults. Chests of drinks in garage and patio. Put away all valuables. Plastic ware so you will not have dish buildup. Large garbage bags all over. Congrats!

If you are speaking of parties at home after graduation, I usually just went with plates and cups i school colors.

I have had 5 graduate so far, and they seemed to not 'want' a lot in terms of decorations. The son that graduated most recently wanted his celebration at a restaurant (we were in process of moving at the time).

Not sure what kind of ideas you are looking for. Our focus was more on the food/menu.
