Getting Rid of Rats/mice.

A couple of days ago my husband noticed that the trash bags in our garage were chewed open. We have a window in the kitchen door that leads to the garage. So this morning at 5:45 I woke to feed my son and I turned on the light and peaked through the window to see my worst fear-a large brown rat or mouse or whatever-it was a RODENT! I have no idea if it has ever come into my house or not, we do have a cat, but I want it gone! Since I have an infant and a toddler, poison is out of the question. Should I just put out some traps? Or maybe call an exterminator? Please tell me I am not the only one who has had to deal with this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Okay, ladies. Last night my husband put out two glue traps and one old fashioned wooden snap trap with some peanut butter. This morning? Nothing. So maybe the rat only comes to fill up and then returns in a few days. I'll wait and see. I was afraid of the poison because I thought the rats could track it with them on their feet, fur, etc. and God forbid, if they got in the house, residue could make its way in. But it is good to know that so many of you with young kids have used it with no problem. I'll keep it in mind as a last resort. Thank you for all the info! I saw the nesw story about the infestation in Plano so I know I am not alone!

OK this might sound strange. My husband and I had an issue with a couple of mice when living with my dad. Peanut butter seemed to never work on the traps, even though I've seen success with it before. My husband was eating a can of Beanie Weenies one day and said Hmm, wonder if this would attract them?(No clue why he thought of that) So he dripped just a little bit of the juice from the can on the trap, that night we caught a mouse. He did the same thing the next night and we caught the second and final one we'd seen. Strange, but it worked. I don't know if the mouse could smell it more than the peanut butter or what, but I was happy....no more mice! lol

Rats are really bad this year. Traps are the way to go if you are uncomfortable with poison. As posted above, you can buy the traps anywhere, like Home Depot or Loews. You might consider, if Plano is not too far away, going to the "Do-It_Yourself" Pest control place at 15th street, just west of Custer. They can work with you. Good luck. Also make sure you don't have anything attracting the rats to the garage - don't put your trash bags outside; either put them directly in the garbage can outside or wait til morning and put them in the garbage can outside; don't store it in the garage; it's an open invitation.

Try MetroGuard ###-###-####. We always ask for the same tech-Nick. He does an awesome job and we had boxes set out in garage and flower beds to attract and they check each time they come out. They have always done a good job for us.

You're not the only one! :o) A few years ago we were given a treadmill that had been in a storage building for a while. It was in our garage for about 2 weeks when we started seeing mice. We did not realize the mice had nested in the bottom of the treadmill while it was in storage. Initially they invaded our garage and then I saw one in the house. We used our home warranty company and called an exterminator (we'd only been living in our "new to us" home for a few months). The exterminator came and set TONS of sticky traps in the garage and house (under sinks, A/C closet, behind water heater, etc). He also put poison blocks in the same places and I used cabinet locks and door knob covers to keep the kids out. I never saw another mouse again--and we got rid of the treadmill immediately!!!

Two words. Glue Traps. It is the only thing you can do. I went through the same nightmare! You don't want to use anything else or they will go crawl into a cabinet and die (and stink!) Put the traps out at night, then make your husband dispose of them in the morning before he leaves. Good Luck!

I have a toddler, & we used the poison. We used the little pellets from Wal-Mart. We put them outside in a high place, & then we would just watch to make sure our son didn't try & touch them. It was pretty easy. As soon as we saw that the rats had died, we threw away the pellets. I think they are much easier than the traps...a lot less messier.

We also tried those sonic things that you plug in...those things that send out a frequency that only the rats can hear. They seem to keep them away once the rats had died. You can get those at Wal-Mart, too.

Go to Walmart or even Albertsons and get the "glue" traps. Put a small amount of peanut butter right in the middle of them and set them under the sink, and around the baseboards of the garage. Look for droppings, if there is a mouse or rat there will be a trail. They always follow the edge of a room and when they step on that glue they get stuck. I use to live out in the country and we would have field mice in the garage all the time. The peanut butter works great and the traps are just glue, no poison. I would put them in a zip lock bag and toss in the trash after they were caught. Good Luck, they always freaked me out too.

At our old house that we rented we had tons of rats in the garage area-I would see them when turning on the garage lights to go out there since that is where my dryer unit was. We too did not want to do poison cause then if the rat crawls into a hole in your house then it will smell really bad when it dies. So instead we had a guy come out and set traps-that you can buy anywhere and all you do is put a little peanut butter on the trap and just have your hubby take off the rat from trap once it is dead and re-set the trap. You can get these traps anywhere so dont pay for someone to come do it. Also look for places outside of house where the soil is not up to the side of house where the rat might be getting inside. We finally got rid of all of ours-there was tons off babies and big ones-but take care of it now before you have babies in there. Just keep re-setting traps. Good luck!!

I use Terminex because I hate bugs and rodents. I think I would choose my Terminex over electricity if it came down to it!!! Because we have only open fields behind us, I have him set tons of those box traps around the perimeter of my property. They are about the size of a shoebox, and the rat/mouse can get in, but can't get out. He puts peanut butter in these traps - he said they love it the best. We've never had a problem yet. I think defense is the best to play - especially if you live in a place that is prone to them.

They reproduce really fast, so if you have seen one, then there are probably lots more. I would call someone out TODAY!

THE GLUE TRAPS WORK!

We had a little mouse get into our house and didn't realize it for about two weeks. Once we found it and did a good chase down - we managed to trap it into the guest bath. We threw in two glue traps and a few sun flower seeds on it and within the hour that little sucker was stuck. Worth the trip to Home Depot and $7!

The best way to get rid of a mouse is a trap and put peanut butter on something. We tried cheese and all sorts of stuff but the peanut butter worked. We had a new home and my daughter left an open deal of sun flower seeds in her closet. I was surprised at all the terds with only one. Every time I cleaned out something I found them. Even on my shoes. Looked up in the top shelf of our closet and there were more on blankets. They are a mess. After getting that one we never had any more. GingerW
