Gabby Giffords

I saw that Gabby Giffords was out and about yesterday serving dinner to the troops in her local area. I think it's great that she has come long way since her shooting. And it's great that she's doing so well....however,

She was interviewed and wasn't sure if she was going to run for office again. I personally don't think she's well enough yet to run again. Since the seat she is/would be running for is 2 years - I think it would be in her best interest to take those two years and finish recuperating fully - as I personally don't think she's "back" enough to represent her constituents.

By back I mean - she still has memory loss, stresses easily (and who wouldn't after the traumatic injury she sustained?) and still has body control/movement issues.

What say you? Do you think she's well enough to represent the people of Arizona? Or do you think she should wait 2 years and run again when she's had a total of 3 years of recovery under her belt.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am NOT trying to sell her short. She's come such a long way.

So I should rephrase it - if you were a resident of Arizona or her district - would you want her to represent you or would you want her to get more recuperation time under her belt?

If I lived in Arizona - I would want her to get more recuperation/rehabilitation time under her belt.

Since I haven't seen her, I can't really comment. If she thinks she's up for it, she could run, and then the voters could decide if she's ready..

I think that is up to the people of Arizona to decide, not myself, a person of IL.

I think that Gabrielle Giffords in her current condition is better at her job than 95% of the people currently serving in congress. She is passionate about her job and obviously loves what she does. If she feels called to serve, and the people of her district feel she's doing a good job of representing them, then who am I to judge?

Well, she seems to be in better mental (and possibly physical) shape than Herman Cain, and he may be running for president.
People who run for office by nature have a lot of passion, drive, ambition, ego and let's face it, a whole lot of delusion.
Would I vote for her? If she was running against someone like Cain, you betcha ;)

She has done a good job for the people of Arizona. If they want to vote her back into office, and if she wants to be voted into office, that's their affair.

I daresay that W. does more good in her job than many without a head injury.

Instead of asking IF we were residents of Arizona, if we would want her to represent us, asking the real residents of Arizona would make more sense. The rest of us don't do the voting there.

hey cheryl-

Two years is a LONG time! My only experience with 'rehab' was when shannon came home finally at the age of 3 years (and one week...NOT that I was counting!!). She came home on a vent, in a wheel chair (strapped in, as she could not sit on her own)...and tube fed...and no 'words'...some 'signs'. All the docs said that 'that' was as good as it would get...and she would be lucky to live to five.

SO... I had some 'goals' for her...one was to LIVE to five...BUT to be walking/talking/eating by then...LOL

She was walking...talking more...signing less by five...but still not eating....THAT took a few more years...

Happily, she is 15...in HS...walking/talking/eating...

NO CLUE what her future will hold...nor can I speak to gabby...and her challenges...

BUT

Don't sell her short!!

Just my 2 cents!

Reagan was our president and had early stages of Alzheimer's. People have served in worse condition.

That said, I do think it's up to the people of Arizona to decide. I don't get the impression there's been an uprising of people demanding she leave office.

I think the voters are free to decide if they feel she can represent them well enough if she runs.

I doubt that anyone, save her doctors and possibly her husband could make that determination at this time.

This is a very hypothetical question.

Heck no I don't think she should run. Lots of people have a "feel good" about her, meaning they have compassion for her and her situation, and think she should go ahead with it. I say no, since she is not physically or emotionally well enough to serve in a capacity that requires a lot of her. She needs to think of her health and forget about the rest.

If I understand you correctly, she has two years before she would be up for reelection. I think she has done an amazing job recovering so far, but she even admits that she is not 100%. Who knows what might happen in 2 years and how her recovery will progress? Certainly not me. However, I believe that it is important to note that she has essentially be out of Congress for almost a year now through no fault of her own. Who has been representing her district in the last year since she has been physically and mentally unable to do so? I would have a hard time reelecting someone that had been unable to do her job for several years of her previous term. This is definitely not a slam on her...she is clearly an amazing W..

wow! I just saw this. Why are you interested in her getting relelected when you don't live in her state? I don't know why its your concern. Is it because she is a Democrat and you aren't? Would you ask the same question if she was a Republivan? Maybe her getting better will happen faster and better if she is working because she has something to live for that is important.

Well, I won't name names...but she may be more qualified to do some politicing in our country than others in places of power. Just saying :).

But no, I think she should recover more before running again. But voters do what they do. Maybe it will be another sympathy vote?

I applaud her for such a remarkable recovery so far. I feel she is far from 100%. Sure, the ppl of AZ will decide but I do think she needs to focus on recovery.

Too much too soon can hurt vs help her.

I speak as a wife of a hubby who was almost killed in a car accident ( not his fault) and the trauma he had ( and still does) 15 yrs later.

He's great, don't get me wrong but with head injuries, you often deal with the unknown. He still does not recall anything about the accident. I do, I lived it in ICU with a 4 month old baby at my side as well. Right now he's dealing with shoulder issues all of which were the result of that accident.

I'm not a professional and I'm not judging her but I hope she takes her time to heal.

I don't see why people are being so h*** o* you for asking this. You are intitled to your opinion whether you live in AZ or not. I do live in AZ and would NOT vote for her if she were to run again. I think a traumatic head injury takes YEARS to recover from and I would not trust that she could handle such a high stress job, either in a few years and more likely, ever.
