My husband and I are trying to get away for one night in the Los Angeles area. We RARELY, if ever, get to do something like this, so I am wondering if anyone has any good ideas for a really fun hotel / boutique hotel / bed and breakfast type place close to the Los Angeles area.
We only have one night because the grandparents are just too old to handle little ones for more than one night.
Any suggestions appreciated, we live in the Los Angeles harbor area, so probably willing to go as far north as downtown L.A. or Santa Monica, as far east as Palm Springs, and as far south as Laguna.

Thanks everyone! I'll look into some of these ideas. I neglected to mention that I do NOT want to go to Terranea, because it is literally a 2 minute drive from my inlaws where my kids will be staying, LOL! I want to getaway from the kids for a night, not getclose :)
well, I have had about 6 different people tell me about the terranea resort in Palos Verdes. They says its really nice. I have not been there. Also, I have seen deals on Groupon for this hotel. You should try Groupon and see if they have any deals
If you want something ultra hip in downtown LA, try The Standard Hotel (nicely renovated Superior Oil building). It's sexy and lively with a rooftop pool and bar and their restaurant is really good. If you wanted to add a little arts/sophistication, I think Symphony Hall is walking distance ;) (Can't remember how far apart they are.) Anyway, far cry from a B&B but it's really a cool place if you wanted something a little on the wild side but also architecturally interesting. http://www.standardhotels.com/los-angeles/

I don't know if its the boutique experience you are looking for, but if you want iconic, you could look into the Chateau Marmont. I stayed here once for a girls weekend.
Its famous, star hang out/ sightings, bla bla bla ...
The accommodations I found so so because its an older Hotel. But I enjoyed the pool and restaurants and because its older,we got a pretty good deal on the room.
I love using www.homeaway.com and www.vrbo.com for my trips. i almost never stay in a hotel.
Terranea is beautiful, up on the cliffs, it feels almost like you are in Hawaii. If you like something more urban, the JW Marriott at LA Live is also cool. Great people watching, there are about 23 restaurants within walking distance, the Nokia Theater (anything good playing the night you are going?), the Conga Room, Lucky Strike, Regal Theaters all right in the area.
Good luck choosing. My kids are a bit older now, but I remember just being happy being away and able to sleep, really didn't matter where I was!
I vote for Laguna. When I stay with my folks in LA, I like to go to Dana Point/Doheny for the beach. It's clean, uncrowded, and only an hour's drive. Once you get south of Santa Ana, everything opens up and you feel like you're getting away from LA. Laguna is great, good local restaurants, shops, places to walk, things to see. My husband and I just spent one night at the Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes for our 5th anniversary. Absolutely heavenly. I highly recommend. (there were a fair number of kiddos there I'll have to say but there is an adult only pool and the kids were very well behaved when we saw them).
