Frustrated in Fargo

D.B. asks from Fargo, ND

Well we packed up and moved to Fargo last Saturday. We get to the new place (rented from a newly divorced man moving back to CA) and he hasn't started packing. Our lease that we had to ask for is dated the first, but he said he'd be out by Saturday. So, here we are Tuesday and my husband called him at noon and woke him up. He was going to start packing. The 5 of us and dog have been in the hotel since Saturday. Who does that? No wonder why his wife left him.

Has anything like this happened to anyone else?

So on to Fargo....any thing fun to do? Any cute stores you love? What about groceries....I noticed there is no Aldis, anything comparable ?

What can I do next?

If your lease says the 1st but he's not going to be out until the 4th, you need to figure out the "daily rent" and he needs to give you credit for the days you could not move in. Also, he needs to reimburse you for the hotel and dining costs for Wed. Thurs and Friday.

Hope you like your new town!

I think you have gotten good advice for dealing with the situation. I have been in the same situation on a smaller scale. The place I was moving out of, the landlord's brother was moving into. They showed up a sat earlier than they were supposed to. I was pretty much ready to go, but my new place wasn't ready. One of the guys had moved out, but the other one still had junk there. It was a mess!

It has been a long time since ive been in Fargo, so some of this may have changed. Definitely check out Zandbroz in downtown. It's a fun gift shop/book store/soda fountain. We also had a great time at a semi-pro baseball game. The best fresh roasted peanuts I've ever had. There was also a place (I think by the mall) that had an indoor gocart track and arcade type games. I agree this would also be a fun time to just explore!

I lived in Fargo for a few years when I was in college and I really enjoyed it. One of our favorite places to go included Buffalo State Park (about 30 mins east). Our favorite restaurant was HuHot (on 45th St north of I-94). The Scheel's store is really fun and has a big ferris wheel in the middle of it (right by HuHot). Watch for different activities at the college campuses and the fairgrounds. I know they started doing horse racing again but only once in awhile so you would have to find a schedule. Sorry the landlord is being so difficult but hopefully you will be able to move in and get settled soon so you can enjoy your new home.

Oy vey.

No freakin wonder.

Yes, DO subtract the cost of your hotel from the 1st onward, AND look into cleaning services (since dimwit who hasn't even started packing I wouldn't rely on to do a 'move out' clean, so you're ready), and if you have to use them, deduct those charges as well.

TAKE PHOTOS both before and after, and if you can do it on the sly, on the first as well, since he may try to challenge you in court (Oh the house was empty and spotless on the 1st! These renters are trying to take advantage).

Same token, don't pay in cash for ANYTHING.

Sorry for the unsolicited advice, but Ive moved a lot, and idiot landlords do happen from time to time. As long as you've got your lease and proofs, your rental history won't be destroyed if he pitches a fit. (Kudos on the lease!)

No personal recs for Fargo... But part of my moving tradition are "explores". Which means just driving around getting lost and finding cool stuff. It's funny, but after a month, I often know the area better than long term residents. A few good explores should help pass the time.

Good luck with the move in.

I haven't lived in Fargo for quite a few years, but there used to be a small zoo that was free ( I think ). Definetely check out the Scheels in Fargo. Cashwise grocery store has lower prices. Gordman's is my favorite store - its in West Fargo. Moorhead has a cheap movie theatre - like $2 for an older movie.
