How do I get my 17 mo. old son to use a fork or spoon?
He only wants to use his hands and I offer the utensils, but he won't use them - help!

What can I do next?

Have you tried letting him see another child of the same age using utensils? My son didn't want to use the utesils even after I offered, but when I met a friend with a girl the same age who did use a spoon, my son started to at least try. Don't worry about it so much, he will get it eventually.

Be glad that he is eating. When he seems to get picky give him a fork and spoon. Sometimes if he sees other big kids using them he may want to use them too. My daughter is 20 months and I finally was able to get her to use them.

Its easier for them to use a fork but many kids like table foods at this age. I wouldn't stress about it because he will use them as he gets older and is more coordinated. ALways give him utensils even if he never uses them. He is still young and I am sure he will start using them soon.

It is easier for him to use his hands. Hell get interested in utensils soon, but probably will still use his hands. When my son was 2 1/2 or 3 he would pick up food with his hands and then put it on the fork to eat it. I used to work in daycare and we would give kids spoons at that age. they would push food on with finger and eat. it just takes time and patience.

That is just going to take some time - I have an 18 month old daughter who has refused any help eating for about 3 months now. She will NOT let you feed her or help her in any way! We give her a fork or spoon and show her what to do with them, but she usually ends up with a HUGE mess! And she still uses her fingers most of the time. I just put the utensil on the plate or in the bowl and let her use it as best she can - and she is getting better about it. It's a learning process for sure, and time is going to be the key.

My daughter will be 17 months the middle of May. I poke the food with the fork and then give it to her. That will work for a few bites - but that's all. Then it's back to fingers. It's just a stage, and he'll get thru it.
