My 5 year old son has been on flovent for asthma/allergies for 4 weeks. The past three weeks I have noticed a behavioral change. He is irritable, aggressive, and mean. Has anyone else experienced any behavioral changes while on Flovent inhaler?

What can I do next?

Flovent is a steroid so it is entirely possible to have behavioral changes. What dose is he on? Maybe they can lower the dose. My son is on singulair for allergies and he is fine with that. I am a respiratory therapist so if you have any other questions just PM me.

When the doc put my little guy on something for bronchitis he suddenly had behavior changes too. The Pharmacist told me that it was common in little people to do this because the med was drying them out so much in the sinus' that they were basically having pain with every inhalation and they couldn't tell anyone exactly what was happening because they don't have the ability to verbalize "My head is hurting and my sinus' are like a dry socket toothache", He needs either a lower dose or a different med but 90% of the time any med for allergies IS going to dry them out too much on a full dose.

The FDA requires that any side effect observed in more than 2% of the population during clinical trials or when released to the public be included in the attached (linked) document, the package insert. The "Adverse Events" start on page 20 but make NO mention of changes in behavior:

However, everyone has a unique body chemistry that will react differently to medications. So, while he may experience the side effect, it may not be in the literature supporting the product.

Call your pediatrician and pharmacist, let them know you believe this is a causal relationship and ask what options you have.

Hi M.; my name is M. and I work for a tobacco prevention program, I thought my answer wld help you w/your question bc I work w/a lot of kids that hv Asthma. In my experiences I've nvr had a parent mention such actions with their child while using the "Flovent" inhaler. As I'm sure you already kw that Flovent isn't used for an onset asthma attack; "Albuterol" I hv found to be the most helpful with that type of attack. You mentioned your child has bn using Flovent for only 4 wks, is he on any other medications now? Antibotics, steroids, ADHD/ADD medications used for children actually do hv affects when combining the two; my advice to you wld be to talk to your child's pediatrician on possibly changing his inhaler, there r several that wld benefit him w/o the change in behavior. I hope that information helps M., mostly for your son, I'm sure it's very difficult and frustrating for him as well. Good luck and stay COOL in this HEAT!!
