Hello, I am waiting in a long line at the post office right now, wondering why the line is so long today, jan. 2nd, after Christmas! Do you think some people wait until after Christmas to mail their Christmas packages? Taking a poll as to what you think! Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

FYI - most of the people had packages.

Probably buying stamps, the price goes up later this month to 49 cents per stamp. Forever stamps will still be good, but they will likely sell out quickly.

All over the news I read that people did most of their shopping online this year - amazon had record sales. So I guess returns have to be done via mail service too...

Well, the post office was closed yesterday, so you can be sure that there are lots of people who would have otherwise gone yesterday. I'm pretty sure that many of the packages have nothing at all to do with Christmas--I mailed 1 package for Christmas this year, but send several other non-Christmas shipments throughout the year.

I'm sure some do mail after Christmas--you can get cheaper deals in the after-Christmas sales; some don't start to celebrate til Christmas Day, and then observe all 12 days of Christmas. Gifts that arrive before January 6th are not late--heck, the 3 kings haven't even gotten there yet!

Returns, probably....

I was at the post office on December 31, mailing a Christmas package.... and.. this one would probably take almost 2 weeks to get there! I was shipping it to my daughter in Seoul... I just hadn't gotten it shipped earlier, like I should have.

Since they are downsizing branches, there are always lines at our PO's.

It could be a lot of returns. And yes, many people procrastinate.

I was horrified when I needed to go to the post office on Dec. 17, just certain the lines would be long. They were not. I just mailed all my families christmas packages today on Jan. 2 because I just could not do it before the holliday. So, you are dealing with that the backed up business from the new year Holliday as well as all the late christmas packages and christmas returns, and the fact that people put off a lot of things until the holidays are over, like going to the post office.

maybe people are mailing their returns in? Many people bought on-line this year instead of going to the stores.

Some people who celebrate the twelve days of Chirstmas give their gifts on Epiphany. (That is the day the three kings arrived and presented their gifts.) Then there are all the people who are returning online purchases. There may also be people who are sending packages unrelated to the holidays who waited until after Christmas to avoid the line ups.

well I went to the post office at noon today, to the outside box to drop my mail in, and it was so full it was overflowing. If I wanted to, I could've swiped someone's mail out of there. I dropped it in another box. I was wondering at that time if people were paying end of year bills or something. But you may be right, since you were inside with boxes. Whatever the case, I'm glad it's over!! Come on Spring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know, there's ALWAYS a long line at my post office, holiday or not. I avoid that place as much as I can.
