Essure Vs. Paragard IUD

I do not know what a Paragard IUD is but I have had the Mirena IUD for 6 years now (since my second child was born). We had to switch it last year cause it only lasts 5 years. I LOVE it. I have had no side effects. I have never taken the pill and am not big on drugs or hormones in my body. I have not noticed anything from this but the freedom we have. On the second one my husband did feel like he maybe felt it. The dr. snipped it shorter. OH, on the second one, my body I guess rejected it and it started to push down. When my husband was feeling the string, I went to the dr. and he saw that it was falling out, so we changed it and snipped the string.

I'm in the absolutely LOVE it category of people with Paraguard. I'm coming up on my 9th year with it. First 3 periods were gnarly (tons of cramping) and then *poof* my body got the point that it was there to stay. My OB offered muscles relaxers if I needed them (she had an IUD as well), but Midol was enough.

Paraguard has a BETTER (aka lower) failure rate than a tubal... tubals DO create hormonal side effects (although the studies are ongoing to try and figure out why) that last until menopause for most women... so I'm sticking with Paraguard until menopause. I wouldn't get essure done, because a) it's so new b) it's permenant & c) I don't want hormonal side effects, and it's really unknown if it creates the same ones common to getting a tubal done (wild mood swings, rage, odor issues, BP, etc.).

My paraguard was inserted by my CNMidwife/OB (same women who delivered my son) a few months after he was born.

I didn't have the Paragard but I did have the Mirena and I loved it - I was practically period free for the 5 years it was in. Once that time was over, I decided to go more permanent. But instead of doing the Essure, I went with the Adianna procedure, same thing except Essure uses metal coils and Adianna uses plastic. For the procedure they put me to sleep, but I have heard of others that were just given some valium. Mine was done in a surgical center, had some mild cramping later that day, but nothing I couldn't handle. I had to go get an ultrasound done 3 months later where they injected a dye and watched via ultrasound to make sure there is complete blockage. I was very pleased with how things went - not invasive like a tubal would be.

I have a paragard and think it's great. Any OB should be able to put one in. I love not having to worry about birth control, and while my periods are a little heavier, I don't have bad cramps at all. And it's reversable and has no hormonal effects (natural or artificial - I don't know how essure works). Strongly recommend it.
