My kids are 2 and 5 and love the Elf and believe wholeheartedly in Santa (which I love). My MIL wants to show them this movie, which has the theme of the boy not believing in Santa. Am I being too paranoid to want to avoid this movie? I'd like to keep up Santa until they are 9 or so, if possible. Thoughts?
my daughter is four and she really enjoyed the movie; and it helped to cement the concept that she mustn't touch her elf or else he'll lose his magic. so for what its worth, no harm, no foul.
My kids watched it for the first time last night (they love the story and their Elf, so we recorded it last week). At the end the boy reaffirms his belief. Neither of my kids (2 and 3 1/2) liked it as much as I thought they would. Neither said anything about not believing, they just didn't get into it which was a total shock to me since they love all things Christmas.
Mine are 3 and 4 and I thought about that too AS I WAS WATCHING IT! No worries. The younger twin girls and elves in the movie are just as incredulous about not believing as mine would be. They were so excited to see all of the elves and see that others have elves too...warning, it features girl elves and black elves (I have one girl, one boy, both black, and we have a white elf...GASP) I don't knw if that "diversity" is available in the stores yet. It's a cute film, and the kids really enjoyed it. They actually found some visual explanations for the Christmas magic I had been describing :)
My kids all enjoyed it. We now have an Elf that's been jumping around the house as a result.

Yes, it starts with the boy that does not believe which is an extremely common premise for Christmas movies. His turn around happens very quickly.
It is really cute and they all enjoyed it, even the 2 1/2 year old. We just bought it for them so they can watch is again as they wish.
All 3 of mine believe (Yes, even the almost 11 year old!!) and are enjoying the Elf and can't wait for Santa to come visit!!
As someone else said, it's a common premise - Polar Express and The Santa Clause start the same way, with a boy not sure whether to believe in Santa. I always worry about the effect, but so far it hasn't been a problem for my own kids. (My little ones are 5 now... my 8-year-old is questioning, but that started back in September, so I'm pretty sure that was from someone at school! The movies, if anything, seem to reassure her.)
Every night my 2.5 yr old requests to watch the Christmas Elf! She loves it and seeing Sants too. I think it got her more into finding our elf. Our 7 year old enjoys the movie as well!
