Ear Piercing - Fort Worth, TX

We have wanted to pierce my daughter's ears since she was born. The doctor advised waiting until she was 6 months old. She had cold after cold all winter and I was waiting for her to get well. With one thing or another here we are at 11 months old and I still have not had them pierced. I can't imagine her sitting still to get them pierced. Did I wait too long? Any success stories?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, we got them pierced at 1 year... at my husbands request. He was really the one behind it all. I cried that night because she looked so grown up. Then I was the one who had to clean and turn them LOL. Well, now i think she looks very cute and I have learned a lot. Piercing or not is a family cultural decision.. its like circumcision which i think is a little cruel too. I did make a pledge and I mean it.. if she ever wants plain earlobes back we will let them close.

She cried while it was done -- stopped 5 minutes later, then has not paid attention to them since then. Thanks for all the good advice. I really appreciate it.

I had my daughters done (at 6 months) bit she never plays with them (now 15 months) or even knows they are there. I only use the starter earrings that way she cannot pull them out. She cried a little bit, but was quickly over it. I think it is adorable!

My daughter will be eleven months on the 12th of June and we went this last weekend to get her ears pierced. She did really well. She cried for maybe a minute. They told us to expect the same kind of reaction that she has when she gets her shots and that was the best way to describe it. We went when they first opened and it was in and out. The girl did a great job, and she showed my daughter her reflection in the mirror right afterward so Kennedy was distracted immediately from the pain! Good luck!

Okay, I must be in the minority on this one. With all that is involved in taking care of a baby and toddler, worrying and caring about pierced ears seems too much at this young an age. When my daughter was an infant, everything went into her mouth. I had to pull out a dime, and a barrette, too scary for me.

I had mine done at age 10 for my bday, and told my husband that our daughter will not have hers done until that age or later if she doesn't want it done. I feel that she should be responsible for the care of earrings, and that it should be something that is earned.

My daughter does wear necklaces (not to sleep in) so she has the girly jewelery thing already.

I know that I'm in the minority, but felt that the other side of the issue should be raised.

I did my my eldest daughter's ears at 22 months. I kept putting it off and then just did it one day - seriously should have done it earlier. It was like pulling teeth to clean them the required amount each day.

I took my youngest daughter at 14 months and she was fine. Of course she didn't like being held still to actually have it done, but after that it was smooth sailing. Cleaning was sometimes a chore, but nothing like my older daughter. I really don't think you've waited too long; I bet your daughter will be just fine.

She'll be fine, it happens so quick. They cry for a little bit and get over it. I did my daughter at 6 weeks, but my niece was a year. No worries!

Okay, I wanted Haylee's done since she was newborn also, but her dad threw a fit and said that I was not allowed to do it until she uttered the words of wanting to have them pierced herself. So I abided by it. But then I kind of pulled a fast one on him, we were walking through the mall back in February and as we passed by claires I whispered and asked her if she wanted to. Well of course she did, and there was nothing Josh could say about it. I will tell you that as soon as it was done my little heart sank, at first glance I felt like I had taken all of her innocence away with those earings. So think about it first. Back to your actual question....you do need to wait now that she is 11 months old. You have two time tables to do this on, before she is really aware of her ears so that she will not play with them, or to wait until she is old enough to understand how important it is to clean them, and not touch them.

I highly suggest you have your doctor's office do this procedure. They normally will numb the earlobes first and then do both ears at the same time. They mark the ears with little dots first so that you can ensure they are even and centered.

It definitely is not too late as long as both ears are done at the same time. If you go some place that does one at a time, you may have an issue trying to get the second lobe.

I had both of my girls ears pierced around 6 months. I did them both at Wal Mart and had them do both ears at the same time. They prefer not to, but if you ask they will. This way- they dont get too upset to get the other ear done. Also, I held them in my lap and fed them a bootle while they did it- that keeps them still. Good Luck- they will look so cute!!!

Hi S.,
I would go ahead and do it now. She's at a good age and it is over so fast it may not even hurt her.
I had my daughters done at 6 months and one ear lobe would always get infected.
We let them close up and re-did it at 3 yrs old.
She still did really good at 3, just said "ow" and that was it. : )
The one ear lobe became infected again and we had to let it close up for the 2nd time.
I've pretty much given up for now unless she chooses in the future to do it but the pain from it becoming infected all the time was pretty bad so I don't see her getting them peirced again anytime soon in her future.

Of course, this is just my daughter and I would still recommend to getting a little girl's ears peirced.
Having your ears peirced is something almost every little girl will want and she'll thank you when she's older for getting it done while she was so young.

Good luck, it's an exciting experience and she'll be just fine! : )

I say do it now. I remember when I was 7 years old and I was just dying to get them pierced....but I was so scared. I waited until I was 14. Just do it now. Sure it is going to hurt..just for a few minutes, and then she will get over it. She will never even remember it. I took my daugter at 3 months. I didn't want her to wait like I did :)

S.,
I have 3 girls ages 6,4 & 1/2, & 3. My husband wanted thier ears pierced from birth & I kept saying NO (mainly because as an infant there were enough colds, and other germs much less spit up & bieng in day care too many other kids that I felt might pull on them b'cause it was something shiny----& the fact that I would have to do all of the daily cleaning & checking them for loose backs or infection & with the 3 of them I already felt overwhelmed), BUT grandma showed up 2 years ago for my oldest birthday & before I could protest had her all fired up about going to the mall to play, GET HER EARS PIERCED, then get a toy & a cookie!!!! How could I dissappoint my baby & say NO? So begrudgingly I went along with my other two!!
We went to a store called "LIBBY LU" the manager & the asst mgr were the piercers. once there my other two cried & cried to get thiers pierced too. Soo----being the sucker/fair playing mom I am I said ok to all of them! We picked out the piercing studs & off we went to the chair---we started littlest to biggest!! So my 1 yaer old (who is bigger than her sisters--just ask her she'll tell you) went first they each get on each side mark thier ears with a marker check to see if thier marks line up then countdown 3,2,1, POP!!! And it was done ......of course she did CRY & FUSS so we went into the mall & bought A lollipop & she was fine within minutes!!! The 2 older ones say this display & decided to be BIG & did not cry one single tear(although you could tell they wanted to) so they got lollipops too!!!
I thought at the time it was kind of pricey $22.00 per child but that included the piercing studs, the antiseptic rinse (that you use every day, & a coupon for a free 3 pack of earrings of your chioce after the 8 week healing period is over!!
My girls LOVE thier pierced ears & they still wear their piercing studs(they got the ones that look like little diamonds with 14kt gold around them) and the earrings still look as good today as the day we got them done!!!!

I HOPE IT HELPS!!! IF YOU GO THERE YOU"LL LOVE LIBBY LU IT'S A VERY GIRLY PLACE!!!!!

GOOD LUCK,
K. SAHM of 3 beautiful & busy girls, 1 rotten cat, 1 large thinks it a lap dog dog, & 1 wonderful hubby!!!

P.S. Just remember take a bottle, or a special treat for immeadiately afterwards--redirection the best friend to moms everywhere--& go somewhere that they do both ears @ once!!!!

Why would you pierce your infant's ears? Little girls are precious regardless of their ears being pierced. I agree with the other lady that posted. Let your daughter make the decision about wanting to have her ears pierced. My daughter is 4 and has never once asked about getting hers done. And she won't be allowed to for quite sometime. I just think infants with pierced ears is ridiculous!

1st daughter we waited until she was one- You go to Claires- they sit you in a chair- your daughter is in your lap- when it is time you have to hold her still (hold her forehead and arms down)-- it takes only a minute. She will survive and forget the whole process once you walk out of that store. Trust me- get it done now---

2nd daughter we waited until she was 5 months. She only cried after the snap of the piercing gun. Her cry lasted for about 3 minutes.

It is all worth it---

I would get it done now. I think you are still in the window where she will be less likely to bother them once they're in, she won't be fearful and they will be easy for you to clean. The longer you wait the more difficult it will be.

I had mine done when I was two weeks old (good thing, I was bald until I was 3!) and my DD was 3 months old (they say wait until they have had their first round of shots). Our pedi told us if we were going to do it, sooner is much better than later. Also, find a place where two people can do the holes at the same time. And they only cry for a few minutes, and she will be thankful you got them done early! I got my second holes when I was 9 and I was SCARED TO DEATH. Good luck!!!

Dear S.,

Pierced ears are a tradition for all the girls in our family. In my extended family, all the girls had their ears pierced after three months old. Well, when our first daughter came along, my husband who did not have this tradition in his family thought it would be barbaric to put our daughter through this at such a young age. I agreed to wait until our daughter was older. By then, she was a year old and I had the same worry.

My suggestion is if your daughter's earlobes are healthy, go ahead and take the plunge. But first, check out the ear piercing facility to see how they interact with children your daughter's age and older. At your daughter's age, it should be like working with a photographer taking a photo or even working with a pediatric nurse giving her a shot. If that person has done their job well, it would be over before your daughter knew what hit her.

I did my daughter's ears at 1 year. Go to Claire's. Make sure the manager does it, or someone trained to do babies/infants.
See if you can get both ears done at the same time. I didnt, and the first ear was easy as pie! The second one, she knew what was coming and cried a bit.
Her ears did great and never grew over. I just cleaned them with alcohol 2wice a day and turned/twisted the back of the earrings at the same time. They look so cutie-wootie! Don't worry about the cold thing....my daughter has constant ear infections, and she did just fine!

I know I am odd man out but here goes.......I personally felt like ear piercing was my daughter's decision. She is 12 and she decided this past January that she would like her ears pierced. She never asked or was interested before middle school.
