Dslr's... Anyone Have One?

I have wanted a DSLR since my son was, well, born. Never got one because of the price, but have had 2 point and shoot digital camera's, one of which I just sold on ebay, if that tells you anything about how I felt about it. And it wasn't a super-cheap one, I paid $230 for it. So finally, I have decided to bite the bullet, and not miss anymore of those great shots due to having a less that spectacular camera.

I was just looking for any recommendations from mom's out there using a DSLR that you love - or hate. Although I will be a novice at using a DSLR, I take LOTS of pictures, and do like to learn about my camera so I can get the most out of it. I do want an inexpensive DSLR, not looking to spend $1000. More like $500. I photograph my son, mostly, so I am looking for a good camera for all those action photos, as no 4 year old boys ever sit still, at least I don't think so. I know everyone has their preferences, but just looking for some "DON'T BUY THIS CAMERA BECAUSE" or some "YOU HAVE TO BUY THIS CAMERA BECAUSE" recommendations...

Looking forward to your responses!

Look for a 'beginners' DSLR. Now days you can find a great DSLR for a reasonable price. ANd you are good to want one, the delay is almost nonexistent on them, so you never miss a moment.

I shoot Nikon (I'm a photographer) and have owned everything from the very old film SLR's (that you had to wind the film yourself!) to a D300. I use the D300 now. A great entry level DSLR for a Nikon is a D40x, or a D80. You can find a used D50 or D70 for $300 or around there. Both are excellent camera's that will suit you well.

If you prefer Canon, you can find an XT or Xsi. Again these would suit you well with the camera and kit lens for snapshots.

Find a camera store in your area, they likely have used camera's that have been factory serviced and are in pristine condition, and you can get them for a very reasonable price compared to new, and its just as good. I've purchased 3 used DSLR's and have never had a problem with them.

Purchase a camera with the kit lens. ITs a basic zoom lens that will suit snapshots well. If you want to learn more about shooting an SLR camera, picku p the book 'Understanding Exposure' by Bryan Peterson. It will teach you the basics on using your camera outside of program/auto mode, and how to shoot creatively.
Good luck!

Nikon D60,
Have owned it for 2 years. Love it!!!
I have added a lense, two filters, and a external flash. I know longer take my kids to the studio. Photo processing also makes a differnce. So make sure you get professional processing done.

I love, love, love my Canon rebel! it is easy and catches all the good picks. There are a few different levels of the rebel with different price points. I'm sure there would be one in your price range.

I loved my Canon Rebel pre-digital camera (film days). I have been wanting an SLR. Cannot afford it now and have a digital from 5 years ago that cost me about $400 then and is very outdated. (The SLRs were about $1000 then.) My brother loved his Canon Rebel film camera and bought a Canon Rebel SLR about 2 yrs ago and loves it. Not the most modern one, but wanted to pass it on. Have fun with your new purchase! I'm jealous!
