Don't Know How to Sign My Name with My Sons

I am a single mom and my son has an old fashioned name, "George". When we go to things like weddings where we have to sign our names I never know how to sign it. For example, R. and George Jones. So then I feel like it looks like my son is my husband or something. I want to include him when I sign something, but I wish I could think of a way to do it w/out it appearing like he is my husband. People have said oh we know who he is, but I still wish there was some other way to sign things so you can see he is my child, not my husband. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

Just sign it with your last name and put family after it. Like my last name is Bryant. I would sign it Bryant Family.

For gifts to people who are obviously your friends and family, I think R. and George is perfectly fine. If you are including your last name, you could do "R. Jones and George" but again, they are friends/family so do you really use your last name?

You should sign it, "R. Jones and George." When a couple signs their names and include their children, they sign it "Mark and R. Jones, and George." It is a tricky thing, though, isn't it?

R. Jones and little George? Or Ms. R. and George Jones [insert age in parenthesis]
I'm a single mom and I always sign cards "Love K. and baby Jack" even though my son is 2.5 now

You could always sign as Ms. R. and Master George Jones, that is the appropriate was to address a child (and little girls are Miss).

How old is he? If he's old enough to hold a pencil, you can trace his name and have him trace over it with a crayon or pencil. If he can't write yet, still write his name and let him scribble next to it for his own 'signature'.

You've gotten really good ideas from the other moms.

You could also look in a book of etiquette to see what they recommend.
My guess, if you wanted to combine formality with non-traditional phrasing would be, "Ms. R. Jones and son, George"

You can sign it as R. Jones and George. That way it does not look like you two are an item.

"R. Jones and George" if it's all on the same line - or "R. Jones" on one line and "George Jones" on the next. Is George old enough to want his own line? You're right - it's good to help people understand what the relationship is. You're a classy mama for thinking about this!

I always just sign my name with my son's. It never crossed my mind someone would think he's my husband. Everybody who knows us knows he's my kid.
Even when we sign guest books at museums and things, I sign it the same way. Never thought about it.

Like the other moms said, just designate that he's your son.

Best wishes!

If you were married, you'd sign you and your husband together, followed by the children. So, follow that format. Adults first, then children. Sign R. Jones and George. Then it is obvious you are not a "couple", but a parent and child.

If it's informal and you don't need to include your last name, I would sign your name in cursive and his in printed letters. As soon as he gets old enough, he can sign himself. Otherwise, I like Lynn's idea - your full name and just his first name.

all the other suggestions are great! i love how my husband signs our daughter Sophie's name on cards... he writes it in child like handwriting with a backwards S :) it's cute and endearing, i think. in a couple of cards i let her put her hand in her pureed peas and rub it on the card, people loved it!

I *think* appropriate etiquette is just to sign you both with the same last name--as in R. Jones and George Jones, rather than R. and George Jones, which does indicate a married relationship.

I would sign with my first and last name and then put my son' name underneath. I know when we get formal invitations (like wedding) the envelope is usually addressed that way.

I would say you should sign "R. Jones and George" just like when you get an invite that says "Mr. and Mrs. Smith and kids"
