Does It Get Better??

Hello moms,

Question for moms that have kids in daycare: my son started daycare just a few weeks ago. I really like this daycare and I believe that he enjoys his day there. However, he is sick A LOT! He goes for 2 weeks being ok, then he comes down with one thing or another for a week or 2. This is taking a toll on my work and of course not to mention, I simply hate to see him sick - poor guy is usually miserable. So question is, does it get better after they've been in daycare for a while? Will this become less frequent? I hope to hear good news :).

What can I do next?

My daughter is in daycare and she has only missed a handful of days in 20 months.

However, most of her illnesses were when she first went into the toddler room (12+ months). In the toddler room, they went outside for recess and interacted more with their classmates and the rest of the school population. The infants were kept separate.

My daughter was never home sick for more than a day, but the mobility of a toddler allows them to get into more messes and germs than an infant.

My pediatrician told me that the first one or two cold & Flu seasons are tough after a kid is in daycare. After that things usually get better and their immune systems are stronger.

Its a REALLY tough call though and I can understand your angst - my daughter just recently got over the flu and I ended up being at home for 2 weeks because it was a severe case. My work was very understanding but I nearly quit work anyway during the whole ordeal.

Good luck!!

What kind of illness is he getting? Look at what he's eating there. Is it something that is new to him? Does he only get sick after certain things? If yes, it could be a food allergy. My son would get sick all the time, then I started tracking it. Ok, today he has a fever, in the last 2 days, he had... turns out he is allergic to pears. He would get sick - high fevers, stomach aches-, get put on meds, get better, then 4 days later get sick again. The shcool was feeding pears every 2 weeks on Wed. My coworker's son went through the same thing. Turned out he was allergic to one of the spices that the daycare was using.

Good luck

Yes, it gets better!! My daughter was in daycare for almost 3 years and the first year is the worst. Once they build up their immune system which according to our pediatrician happens much faster if they are in daycare then they rarely ever get sick.

Hang in there and I hope you are blessed with an employer who is understanding.

It seems like when they are little they get everything in a daycare no matter how clean the place is! They only way i found that it got any better is when i pulled my kids out of daycare. They LOVED it there but I couldnt take the cost I was paying any longer so we pulled them out. When we did this both of my children were sick with colds and runny noses (and had been frequently) but within a week they were well and have only been sick once in a while since we haven't been in the daycare scene. Best of luck, hard to decide what to do and very had on your employment and seeing them sick.

Ah, such is the ultimate truth that all moms discover when their children have to go to daycare. They always seem to be sick. My best advice is to do two things:

1.) Closely monitor his diet and make sure that he's eating well. His body needs all of the right nutrients for his immune system to function optimally. Also make sure he's drinking plenty of fluids and that he's getting plenty of sleep. Wash his hands when you bring him home too.
2.) Have a talk with the provider. She should have no problem with you asking questions about the sanitary routines she takes the kids through every day. For instance, she should be having them wash their hands several times a day (helping the little ones like your son) and she should be sanitizing all of the toys every night, especially if one of the children is sick. Also ask her about her policy regarding sick children (i.e parents not bringing their sick children in to infect all of the other children) and ask if it can be enforced a little more strictly. Don't feel bad about asking all of this, you are your son's mother and you have every right to inspect and monitor his daily environment for any threats to his health and safety.

That being said, your son's immune system should adjust eventually. It does take a little time, and even then it always seemed with my oldest (who was in daycare a lot while I was in the military) always had at least a runny nose. Just do what you can and comfort him for what you couldn't prevent.

The first year , until spring , happens more or less every 15 days which means most of the time.
The second one is about once a month or so until spring.
An the third one is a lot less.
But remember that they have to go throught it. It´s the way to be stronger later. I know it´s a pain but it does get better.
Patience!!
