That the news goes too far?

I read the news on the computer so that when my daughter is around she doesn't have to hear it. I came across an article with video yesterday about a toddler in china that got run over TWICE!! And no one helped. I couldn't believe that they had this video that people could watch (I didn't watch it). I don't know which is more disturbing, that she was hit twice or that no one helped. It really bothers me that they show too much on the news and give too much information that can ruin a case.

What are your thoughts?

So What Happened?

I should have been more specific. I saw this on CNN and it was a surveillance video. I like reading it online so I can skip the garbage news (actors, etc). I stopped watching TV news because I live 30 minutes outside Orlando and got so tired of hearing about Casey Anthony (and yes they still talk about her in the local news). I don't have a problem with my daughter learning about things that go on in the world, but she is only 5 and I have to protect her from certain images. Like war pictures, dead bodies and some Halloween commercials. As for US cases, I think they give way too much info to the public. It causes problems with finding a jury. They should wait until after all is said and done.

Here are my thoughts:
•Left to "whim" we are barraged with "news" 24/7. Media is everywhere...scrolling screens at the bank, billboards, TV, radio, internet, magazines, newspapers, etc....
•To keep sanity (and perspective) I "check" news when I want news.
•I never leave the news "on" at our house--too violent, repetitive, depressing etc. for me AND for my 8.5 year old!
•We DO have power over what we are exposed to--but it takes effort.
•I do NOT mean I believe in living in a bubble
•I DO believe that the media will "make" news when there is none, by hyper-focusing, repeating, detailing minutia, etc.
•I do NOT believe this world is a "more evil" place than it was years ago--I DO believe that every person now hears ANY sensational news within about 10 minutes of occurrence due to the total saturation of numerous sources of media.
•I feel that the media is to blame for a lot of unwarranted fear and paranoia in the world today.

I get what your saying. And as with everything it's our duty to shield our children from certain things. But, I feel to much shielding could be harmful. The news is reality, it's what is happening. It is a tough line to balance. Our 11 year old watches the news with us from time to time and it usually ends with a ton of questions...

Of course the media goes to far, that's their job. Who wants to watch the news where nothing ever happens? This is why they spotlight death, sex, and scandals. I wish they reported more good samaritan stories, just the good stuff in general, but they don't, because it doesn't capture people and draw them in the way a 'what happens next?!' story does. Take baby Lisa for instance. Things like this happen soooo far and few between, but the media makes it seem like it could happen to you RIGHT THIS SECOND, I hate it. No wonder parents are so over protective and paranoid now. No wonder everyone thinks they're fat. I blame the media.

My thoughts are if you are getting your "news" from the internet chances are pretty good that what you are getting isn't the news.

On mainstream news you are not going to see a video like that.

What would bother me the most is a person was video taping it so they could put it on the internet and make money or their 15 minutes of fame.

Go back to watching TV, it still blows but at least it isn't as bad as what you find on the internet.

I read a little bit about this but did not get full details...I did not know it happened in china. And it honestly doesn't surprise me.

Things are different in china. My dad goes to China almost yearly for work, he once told me about a taxi driver that ran over someone stopped the car, pulled his wallet out and shoved money in the persons hand and drove off. So yah, I think its much different then living in the US. So keep that in mind. Doesn't make this story less sad, but just that things are different. Also, their country is run very differently so I'm not sure this video will ruin any case. Not that I want to watch the video and I am surprised they are showing it.

I rarely watch the news and just catch the headlines on the computer. I don't think some things shown on the news is appropriate for little ones either. I also find watch the news to be depressing.

I think the news goes too far. It's so full of such negative images of things that I really do not need to see. I read the news on the Internet. I go to the news websites where you can see all the headlines and only have to read the news that you want to see, whatever is relevant to you. And you don't have to sit through sensationalism, celebrity gossip, commercials for stuff you don't want, etc.

By the way, it's the same news on the Internet that's on tv!!!! I'm talking about CNN website, fox news, headline news network, it's on tv and it's on the Internet! Same thing. Just like you can watch all your favorite tv shows on the internet, when you want to watch them and without all the commercials. I think it's pretty funny that some people think if it's on tv it's true news but if it's on the Internet it's a bunch of crazy talk. Just as much bs on tv

I agree that the news can take it too far. Recently I was out to dinner with friends in a restaurant that had a bunch of TVs all around. The one right in our sightline was showing the news, CNN or something like that, and they were talking about the civil war in Libya, and showing pictures of dead little kids. That's really not what I needed just before I ate.

My thoughts?

Yes. The media goes too far. I don't like that they show things like this and what gets me worse? is that people aren't complaining!!! I would've picked up my phone and called CNN and told them showing that video was in poor taste.

the media is great at stirring up trouble.
Look at what it does for our finances...the talking heads tell you the sky is falling - you run and sell - when in reality - you should keep and buy more. People instead listen to the talking heads more than they do their "guts".

the media decides who should be getting air time for our elections...Gary Johnson isn't getting air time and he should.

Another example, Good Morning America, is not broadcasting ANYTHING about Eric Holder and the Fast and the Furious nor are they talking about Solyndra....things that make you go hmmm...

As to this particular news piece? I am bothered that no one bothered to stop. I'm glad I saw your SWH - or I would be even more troubled that someone recorded it without any notion for helping...

sad. sad. sad.
