Do Babies Do This?

First time mommy here! My LO is three months now, and lately i notice she has this sort of congested sound/grunting when she breaths sometimes. I don't really know how to describe it! But my friend heard it and said that she's heard a lot of babies make that sound! I'm wondering if that's just something they do, or if I need to take her to the doctor for a cold? She seems fine... No coughing (unless there's a finger in her mouth), no boogers... Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you ladies!

So What Happened?

Thank you mommies! I was just curious cause I really hate to take her to the doctor with all those sick kids running around!! I will wait a few days and if I must take her I will!

It's very common. I've seen this in almost all the little one's I've ever cared for. If it becomes a problem use saline drops for her nose and suction her out. It's more likley her just get use to her enviroment.

just sounds like congestion if the baby gets louder or is having a hard time breathing take her to the doctor congestion can lead to other things if it just keeps building.

You could mention it at your next well-baby visit, but if there's nothing else going on and it only happens once in a while I wouldn't worry.

My daughter who is now 5 was also a loud breather. She sounded congested at all times from the day she was born. The snoring got worse as she got older. Turns out, we had her tonsils and adnoids removed...they were both over 2 times the normal size and the doctor said her airway was 75% blocked. There's not much you can do now about that...but something to look into in the future. We waited until she was 4 to have the surgery but wish I had done it sooner. The breathing problem really made it hard for her to sleep. Good luck.

I was wondering the same thing about LO..Little one? But for your original question, sounds normal and I would not expose an infant to a pedi's office this time of year unless you must, with all the stuff that is going around you could expose your baby to illnesses when it is unnecessary.

My little boy had this also...at about the same age. Same situation..no cold, no runny nose. I swear, he truly sounded asthmatic. Every time I took him to the doctors, she'd listen to his chest and back and assure me that it was absolutely nothing. I was obsessed with that sound. It almost sounded like difficulty drawing air. But then I noticed that when his paci was in his mouth, I could still hear it. So most likely coming from his nose instead. But either way....check with your pediatrican if you think its ideal....but most likely nothing.

My son has the same thing. I asked my dr and she told me that it is fine it's just mucus that the can't get rid of but it really doesn't affect them and it is ok. Does she have reflux by any chance? Does it seem worse after her feeding? She is fine.. Don't worry about it. :)

Yes that sounds pretty normal. My son (now 8 mo) has sounded congested since he was born. Some days it sounds worse than others, so much so that my husband sometimes asks me if he's sick. Are you nursing her? I've always thought it had something to do with breast milk; I've read that the milk creates a coating on the nasal passages (among other areas). Apparently this helps keep them from actually contracting a virus since their immune systems are still suppressed and weak.

If you become really concerned you should check with your pediatrician; I believe that a parent always knows if there is something seriously wrong with their children.
